Description

It was hard to connect with either of them for the first part of the book, and as a very visual reader, I really struggled with following the descriptions of Beldam House. Johnson's magical world is so vividly imagined that you'll be tempted to believe in witches and spells yourself. a must read for spooky season' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'Great characters, a wonderful setting and a story that will keep you engaged to the very end' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'Genuine laugh-out-loud moments' ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐'Charming. And when an incarnated monster starts to threaten their existence, Essie teams up with Josh to confront the witch- finder who can bring the end of the world! Essie is dressed up in corsets and stuff and Josh tries to have a coherent thought probably, but all he can think about is her "bosom".

There is a ton of heart wrenching tension, lots of humor, and some spice (towards the back half of the book). Essie Winterscale only ever wanted a normal life but she is unable to suppress her witchiness and is drawn back to the ever-changing Beldam House. Essie explains early that she is afraid of having close relationships with others because she has hurt someone before with her ice powers. At the beginning I remember being a bit confused, but I think that was more about how open Essie talked about magic, even though people. So much so, that I'd happily read a sequel to learn more about the witches of Bedlam House and to see how Essie and Josh's relationship develops - I need more of them. I ended up devouring this book on a blustery Saturday morning, and I was so sad that I had read it in one sitting because I didn’t want to leave the world that Kate created. Essie finds this insensitive as f*ck and Josh has no idea why Essie storms off, because he is insensitive as f*ck. The beautifully picturesque setting, in the form of a rural British village definitely served as a bit of a palate cleanser to all the small town, US based witchy books I’ve been reading lately. After a bad breakup Josh moves from the States to a small, decrepid cottage in England that he inherited from his estranged father.

Josh and Essie meet and they fall in love over jokes about nuts that are not at all funny and just feel cringe as hell. If you're looking for a break from smut fantasy with something that's just so lovely and wholesome, I highly recommend it. With the house being almost depicted as a character, I had such a hard time with picturing the setting and places because of the ambiguity of the writing. After things didn’t work out in his native Seattle, Josh Henderson had relocated to Essex after inheriting a home from his extremely wealthy late father.Despite finding out her owns half the village, most of his properties are caught up in tenancy contracts that leave Josh with no income.

Josh has just inherited some sort of crumbling house in Essex from his father, whom he really didn’t have much contact with growing up. Yes I remember this game, me Gashead, Sammie and Ant played it in the ATH over the fireworks weekend.Josh is new to town after inheriting a rundown farm house and tenants who haven't paid rent in a few centuries. I kind of thought this was another cute silly romance book, but actually got some twist of events towards the end of it, but I'm a bit conflicted if it made it better or not. But when a long buried family secret chases them through a doorway into the 1700s it becomes impossible to hide her true self from Josh any longer. Josh's mom is depicted as selfish for "choosing to be poor" rather than to accept Josh's father's money. I'm so glad that in the last moments of 2022, I got to finish a 5-star read like I haven't had in a long time.
