Tomlinson points to the amalgamation of crisp companies as a reason for the decline in unusual flavours after the 80s (Smith’s, for example, was bought in the 90s by PepsiCo, which owns Walkers; its Bovril flavour didn’t make the cut). From there, crisp flavours became fairly standardised. Sarah Lawson, the marketing manager for the British brand Tyrrells, says 70% to 80% of its sales come from four flavours: lightly salted, salt and vinegar, cheddar and chive, and sweet chilli. Walkers Mix Ups are not suitable for vegans as some of the crisps contain milk. There’s milk in the French Fries, Cheesy Wotsits, Monster Munch and Tangy Cheese Doritos. While the Chilli Heatwave Doritos and the Flamin’ Hot Wotsits don’t have milk, they will have milk powder on them from sharing a bag with the other crisps. Are Monster Munch vegan? Some time ago supermarkets came to the realisation that creating their own versions of well-loved food products could be a real money spinner. By creating similar (but often slightly less enticing) products, but charging a good deal less than the big name brands, supermarkets gave consumers the choice of prioritising brand or economic value. This is apparent across many different food product ranges, including crisps.

These parsnip, sweet potato and beetroots crisps offer a decent alternative to the higher end (and higher priced!) veg crisp options, such as those from Tyrells.

The makers of Kettle Chips were founded in 1978 and produced their first crisps (or potato chips as they would say, being from Oregon, USA) in 1982. They have a factory in Norwich and over 90% of the potatoes they use for UK crisps are sourced from within 35 miles of that factory, which at least gives them something of an ethical edge. Whoever designed this flavour clearly understood how to maximise the chances of someone devouring a whole tube in one sitting. Dangerously tasty. Note that at the time of writing all crisps from Walkers are made in factories that handle milk, which could be a problem for some vegans, and certainly for anyone with a severe milk allergy. Since 2008, Walkers has run its "Do Us a Flavour" campaign, challenging the British public to think up unique flavours for its crisps. Six flavours were chosen from among the entries and released as special editions. Consumers could vote on their favourite, and the winner would become a permanent flavour. [13] In 2018, Walkers launched six new flavours to celebrate the brand's seventieth birthday, with each flavour representing a different decade. [14] History [ edit ]
