The actual books are gorgeous – if you’ve never seen a Persephone book in the flesh, the simple grey cover means the all match on the outside but on the inside each has a different pattern from an appropriate fabric to the period where it was published. Miss Buncle has portrayed them as they are, and some take offence, particularly those who are not portrayed in a particularly bad light. Namely that most of the imaginary endings (marriage, travel, bigamous affair) for some of the very genuine people start to come true, while others -to avoid possible conclusions hinted at in the book (a ghost rising, a wife leaving her bullying husband) - decide upon mending their ways. The penciled date and a penciled name on the blank front end paper represent the only writing to be found anywhere. However she also didn't foresee that some of those with an exaggerated sense of their own dignity would want her punished!

Dorcas is sworn to keep it, but she has to know about it because she's the provider of strong coffee for Miss Buncle. Barbara Buncle has seen her income diminish to the extent that she can hardly survive without doing something drastic to increase her income or decrease her expenditure. Second, you wouldn't think that a book about a lady writing a book would be riveting--but it totally was! If I had a list for books that was labeled simply "charming," Miss Buncle's Book would certainly top the list.

I've got some GR friends who are Stevenson fans, and finally, after reading this book, I feel like I really understand their love for her novels. Stevenson's novels were best-sellers, with more than seven million copies printed and translations in multiple languages. Obviously this is not everyone's cup of tea, but is was definitely mine and I shall read further adventures of Miss Buncle with unadulterated pleasure. When Miss Buncle's book is accepted and printed, the village of Silverstream is in an uproar over who this "John Smith" could be who knows them all so well.

The other aspect I loved is that this is a book about “a woman writing a novel about a woman writing a novel”. Unfortunately, the rear cover of the book is in rough condition (third photo) with significant rubbing.

Miss Buncle’s Book is an easy read, very immersive, and I lost myself only too readily in the village life of Silverstream/Copperfield. The story portrays her as quiet, unassuming and oblivious to others in some ways and an acute observer in others which made an interesting mix. Unfortunately, Miss Buncle had no imagination, so she wrote about her friends – quite kindly and truthfully, of course, for she was a benevolent and veracious soul.
