On Sunday March 26, a star-studded Rangers Legends squad will play a World Legends squad full of global talent at Ibrox stadium at 2pm. Barry Ferguson can’t wait to return as captain and said: “Everyone knows how much I love the club so to have the opportunity to lead the Rangers Legends team as Captain is an honour and I can’t wait to play again in front of the fans.” Even after the Three Lions had won the 1966 World Cup, Baxter’s confidence on the ball was as clear as day when the Tartan Army met the global champions in 1967. He took his country to another win over the Auld Enemy and juggled the ball whilst his teammates found space. It is the second year the event has been hosted in Govan. Last year, the Ibrox favourites from yesteryear took on a team led by Luis Figo. The visitors narrowly won 3-2, with Shota Arveladze netting before an emotional late goal from Paul Gascoigne received a big response from fans. Former Porto and Portugal star Ricardo Quaresma got the winner after Carlos Marchena and Nuno Gomes also hit the target. Read More Related Articles

Rangers even enjoyed their only European success so far during Greig’s spell as their captain. Their six-time Scottish Cup winner lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971/72. He was also regularly a forceful presence and a true leader of men to see the Gers win three trebles. No sooner in the contest it was all-square at three-a-piece. Defoe this time linked up with Kris Boyd who appeared as a half-time substitute and, after finding himself in the area, he saw his initial strike kept out well before smashing in the rebound from the angle as the Ibrox faithful saw a sixth goal on the day.Rangers recognised Tavernier, plus fellow modern-day legends Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, for their iconic contributions. Tavernier joined the club whilst they were competing in the Scottish Championship and helped to secure the title in his debut campaign at the club. Rangers Legend Kris Boyd continued: “Rangers’ 150th anniversary is a proud moment for every supporter and the Weekend of Legends will allow fans and some of the world’s most iconic players to come together and celebrate this incredible milestone. Jermaine Defoe in particular has lost none of his striker’s instinct, albeit he’s only recently retired, as he scored a double and Kris Boyd was also on the scoresheet for a team of Rangers Legends. Luís, Giovanni and Roy will star alongside a World Legends squad featuring Roberto Carlos, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Pires and a Rangers Legends team featuring former heroes such as Paul Gascoigne, Kris Boyd, Michael Mols, Saša Papac and Nikica Jelavić.

Gough helped Rangers win each of their nine-in-a-row league titles, alongside three Scottish Cups and six League Cups. While the Scottish Football Writers’ Association even named him as its Player of the Year in 1988/89. A Gers player had not won the SFWA title since 1977/78. Souness was confident in Ferguson being a success in England as he had taken up Rangers’ captaincy at only 22 years old. He also won the SFWA Player of the Year award in 1999/2000 and 2002/03. The final year of Ferguson’s first spell at Ibrox also saw Rangers win the treble. Commenting on the announcement, Luís Figo said: “I have many fond memories of Glasgow thanks to winning the UEFA Champions League there in 2002 and the Weekend of Legends at Ibrox is set to be another memorable occasion. It was a great day for the fans, charity game, and an amazing turnout. I really enjoyed it. It meant a lot to play in front of the fans again because to be totally honest I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye when I left.Among the array of Rangers legends, there is a definite place in Ibrox history for former Gers captain Barry Ferguson. The midfielder skippered the ship from 2000 to 2003 and again from 2005 to 2009. He also lifted a huge 16 major titles through the midfielder’s spells in Glasgow. A team of club legends took on a Rest of the World select and served up a feast of football in the Glasgow sunshine. But these matches are a reminder that the talent these players were blessed with can still come to the fore when the opportunity arises. There were still moments for the class to shine. I’m looking forward to captaining a team that will include former World Cup, Champions League and Ballon D’Or winners and best of all, the weekend will raise important funds for my foundation which supports children around the globe.” The celebrations had started on Saturday evening as Rangers hosted a ‘Night of Legends’ at New Edmiston House. The likes of Alex McLeish, Arthur Numan and Jorg Albertz took to the stage alongside broadcaster Emma Dodds to tell tales of title triumphs and relive the treasured memories from their glittering Ibrox careers.
