If you set your sight up for say 20 metres, when the subject is much closer just mentally allow for it by aiming the red dot just above the subject.

Method - use pin-point auto focus - track the subject with the red dot and rely on the GX9* (wash my mouth out ) AF to get it right. New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging . Unfortunately there must be other factors at play as when I line up the dots- it was not in fact calibrated for whatever reason. The obvious advantage of the red-dot sight is that the eye's field of vision is much larger than the lens', so you have no difficulty training the circle-and-cross pattern onto the subject if it wanders out of the camera's field of view. The OM-1's subject recognition is not perfect and sometimes fails, but using the dot sight isn't the reason.after a while of using the Dot sight I found I was quickly glancing back and forth from the Dot sight to the LCD monitor while tracking the subject. This adjustment never changes because the rail is solidly mounted and the dot sight fastens into the exact same position every time, an advantage of all-metal construction. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to Heather Broster/Mathieu Gasquet and Mirrorless Comparison with appropriate and specific direction to the original content. Unfortunately, the mount of the sight didn't fit precisely in the camera shoe so alignment was iffy. If you are in a hurry, you can begin a session by mounting the sight on the camera and trusting that the alignment used in the previous session is still good enough.

I'd agree with the comments above though about proper setting up of the EE-1 before shooting, and whilst a tripod or such support probably isn't essential, it does make the job much easier if you can lock the camera down, focus on something at a suitable distance (using single point AF), then adjust the up/down, left/right positioning of the sight to match without fear of the camera moving. I’d always been interested in trying it out and the chance came with the new 300mm Pro that we recently reviewed. You use a scope that also brings a bit of the surroundings into view, so that you can orient better and thus aim more quickly at your subject. The flash shoe must have a 1/4-20 screw socket at the bottom, which simplifies attaching it to the clamp with a 1/4-20 bolt, and should be a "low-profile" shoe (lower than the one shown in the figure) to keep the dot-sight as close as possible to the lens axis. a slight move of the dot sight in the flash shoe will cause misalignment and you will not have the bird in the middle of your photo as it should be.

The advantage of using the EE-1 when shooting is that you can keep your camera further away from your eyes and keep track of what is going on around your subject.

While a difference of a few mm is not really important, parallax is one thing that the sight cannot correct. I cleaned the paint off the collar where the rail went and roughed up the metal where the epoxy went and did the same for the rail. If your RDS alignment is perfect then you can let the camera use its own pinpoint focus system that has been aligned with it.For sports from a suitably long distance I suppose it could work even better since there you can generally judge the distance better and need less adjustment on the fly. Parallax is more important at short camera-to-subject distances, and at large distances between the sight and the optical axis of the lens. In Focus priority mode, on the other hand, sometimes the AF won’t lock at all and the camera will fail to take the picture but at least you’ll know something is wrong.

I also find it helpful to use a camera strap such as the Peak Design Slide or Slide Lite to stop my arms from extending too much. The top of the casing is only there as a sun-shade against stray light and as a finger guard to prevent touching the reticle. Put the camera on a tripod, select the smallest focussing point you can and then focus on a subject at least 50 metres away. With it being permanently mounted on a rifle, it may require less fiddling than the EE-1 which is more portable. Clearly, subject recognition eliminated the problem of slight misalignment of the reticle dot and the camera focus point. If you use a system camera, then you can sometimes move your eye to the screen on the back of the camera, so that you are certain that it’s working properly.
