Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Nikka Discovery Yoichi Single Malt Aromatic Yeast 2022– Made with a yeast that is intended to evoke notes of ginjo style sake, aged in a variety of cask types. Quite mild on the nose, the whisky doesn’t stretch too far from Yoichi’s lightly peated roots as it perks up classic notes of coal fires and mushroom — and, yes, perhaps just a hint of melon-laced sake character. The lattermost is more pronounced on the palate, where the smoke all but vanishes and sweeter notes of fresh honeydew, banana, and bubblegum dominate. Refreshing and lightly sweet, ester-driven flavors are the target of the game here, and I can comfortably say that Nikka successfully delivered on that goal. 96 proof. Besides the pot stills, Miyagikyo has two Coffey stills. These old-school continuous columns make grain whisky, vodka, and gin. And the company also uses them for malt whisky (Nikka Coffey Malt). The hallmark of Coffey stills is the super creamy and smooth spirit they produce. By city bus: 60 minutes from Sendai Station. So the whisky comes from Nikka Group’s youngest distillery, the Miyagikyo distillery. This is a single malt but Nikka uses Miyagikyo’s malt whisky for blending purposes as well. This expression replaced the previous NAS version, which was also called Miyagikyo Single Malt. It has also replaced their remaining age stated expressions, because demand for Japanese whisky remains ever so strong. That’s why the prices for Japanese whisky are extremely high. The whole Japanese whisky industry is based on Scotch. Furthermore, the father of Japanese whisky and Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, designed it this way.

Glen Moray “Classic” is another excellent alternative to Miyagikyo. They both share a Sherry cask influence and a light, fruity profile. And this Speyside malt is even more affordable than Glenmorangie! In addition, Miyagikyo’s stills are heated via indirect steam. It’s another reason for the light, clean nature of Miyagikyo whisky. And it’s in contrast to Nikka Yoichi’s direct fire coal pot stills that produce a robust, savory, and somewhat bitter spirit. This newer version is said to be made with whiskies spanning various ages. Hinting that there might be even older whiskies included than with the previous NAS release. It’s been primarily matured in sherry casks. I couldn’t find more information on the casks but my guess is that the smaller part of the maturation comes from Japanese Mizunara oak casks (Quercus mongolica).

Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii hired Taketsuru to build the Yamazaki Distillery in Osaka. This was the country’s first legit whisky distillery. But after Yamazaki was complete, the two icons had a falling out. Nose Refined, full of ardour. The very exuberant first nose (lavender, marshmallow, marsh mallow plant) is also softly liquoricey and lush (malted barley). Allowed to breathe, succulent perfumes of comté cheese, flowering meadow, and fruits (peach, pear, apricot) intensely take hold of the olfactory arena. Gradually, notes of vanilla, coconut milk and lemon meringue tart draw out the first stage of the tasting.

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). The first whisky that comes to mind is Glenmorangie “Original.” Like Miyagikyo, Glenmorangie has very tall stills which produce lighter whiskies. The flavor profiles of both are similar too. The main difference is the vanilla and caramel ex-Bourbon influence of the Highlands-distilled Glenmorangie. Well, and the price. Because Glenmorangie Original costs about half as much as Miyagikyo.
