The Sheltering Rain is a novel of post-war Shinjuku, the Tokyo entertainment district where after dark "distinctions are up for grabs, and boundaries are marked ambiguously", focused on the local bar-owners, hostesses, and customers. Sheltering Rain is the debut novel of Jojo Moyes. I wasn’t that surprised when I noticed that the Jojo mojo had already been there all along. This author comforts me as reader. I feel cocooned whenever I read one of her books. Does it make any sense when you feel that the book is giving you a virtual hug? It's like comfort food for the mind. Be it predictable and ordinary sometimes, that doesn’t diminish the capable and touching storytelling. The characters are extremely realistic as if it’s mandatory to feel some sort of affinity to some of them with all their shortcomings and internal struggles. Me gustó cómo la autora manejó el tema de la separación. Muchas veces, conocemos o nos reencontramos con parientes cuando algo malo le sucede a una persona importante dentro de nuestro núcleo familiar, y tenemos una especie de unión, hasta que todo se termina y seguimos con nuestras vidas, sin volver a verlos, hasta otro evento desastroso. Ich geb als erstes zu, dass ich mich zu Beginn des Buches mit allen drei schwer getan hatte. Weder Joy, Kate, noch Sabine haben mich überzeugt. Doch je mehr Zeit ich mit ihnen verbracht habe, je mehr ich über sie erfahren habe, um so mehr sind sie mir ans Herz gewachsen. Bueno habiendo despotricado de estas tres mujeres, que a cual esta peor una que la otra, el libro en general no está mal, Jojo Moyes escribe muy bien, por lo tanto, su ejercicio de enlazar la historia familiar de estas tres mujeres, de acercarlas y retratar a una familia, los malos entendidos y los problemas entre padres e hijos, que, todo hay que decirlo, existen en todas las familias, ha logrado en general crear un libro que está pasable.

Kate, hija de Joy, madre soltera, que es una madre abnegada, se la pasa quejándose todo el tiempo que transcurre el libro, que flojera de mujer y que falta de carácter. Tres mujeres, tres generaciones y un abismo enrome entre cada una de ellas. Kate, hija de Joy y madre de Sabine, se fue de Irlanda por la mala relación que tenía con sus padres cuando se quedó embarazada de Sabine y desde entonces no ha visto a sus padres. Sus relaciones amorosas no han sido perfectas y, con la mala suerte que ha tenido junto a las malas decisiones, está de nuevo en una ruptura. Para que Sabine no sufra la separación de nuevo, envía a su hija a Irlanda al rancho de sus padres. Sabine, dolida por las decisiones de su madre y por alejarla de su vida en Londres, irá cogiendo resentimiento hacia su madre por enviarla con unos abuelos que son desconocidos para ella. Joy acepta a su nieta, pero al no haber actuado nunca como abuela, se sentirá incómoda y distante con ella. Este libro trata sobre el amor, pero quizá el tema más importante sea la relación madres e hijas. El abismo entre las tres mujeres parece insalvable y poco a poco vemos como se creó el abismo y si hay salvación para la relación entre ellas. El amor también tiene mucha importancia, como en todos los libros de Jojo. La búsqueda del amor, las malas decisiones, las desilusiones... Sheltering Rain is deeply moving and yet unnervingly depressing. It makes me feel depressed anyway even if it's not depressing. I love Jojo Moyes but this is not one of her best. Let me clarify things first, I didn't love the book as much as I'd loved her other novels, though I had a great time reading it and to say that I cried when the story ended is overrated. But somewhere deep in my heart I couldn't deny the fact that I feel sad, a trifle breathless with it all when the last sentence had been delivered.The Sheltering Rain is a fine little panorama of its place and time -- and changing times -- with an appealing cast of characters from that scene. Si algo ha sabido hacer Jojo Moyes es crear tres mujeres una con más defectos que la otra, ninguna tiene algún rasgo rescatable, diferentes entre ellas, pero de las tres no se hace una, insoportables las tres. The novel consists of eight quite distinct chapters, as the work resembles a loosely connected story-collection. Here the narrator -- married, with children -- enjoys a brief blast of the past and glimpse of how things went for Komei, but at the end is able to return to his staid domestic arrangement -- a nice way of rounding out the collection. The milieu Hanmura describes is a uniform one, even if the cast of characters around them differs from place to place, and they are also unified against the changes constantly encroaching on them -- even if there is only so much they can stem the tide.

Kate's going through a bit of a rough patch and decides to send her sixteen year old daughter, Sabine, to stay with her parents in Ireland while she sorts things out. Her mother and father, Joy and Edward, take Sabine into their home despite the fact that their relationship with Kate has been very strained for many years.
