Description

The Librarian’s Guide to Genealogical Research by James Swan (Highsmith Press): Written for librarians who help patrons with genealogical research, this guide also has plenty of useful information for family history hobbyists. The resources and introduction to genealogy basics make this a great beginner’s guide. Recipe collection: digital scans of handwritten family recipes, perhaps with photos of favorite foods and a family chef’s utensils or dishes The Hidden Half of the Family: A Sourcebook for Women’s Genealogy by Christina K. Schaefer (Genealogical Publishing Co.): Everyone has problems researching some of the females on their pedigree chart, mostly because by law and custom women of the past had few rights. According to Schaefer, the legal status of women at any point in time is the key to unraveling the identity of a female ancestor. The bulk of this reference work details each state, showing how its laws, records and resources can be used in determining female identity. Historical research Enrich the story with historical details: What was in the news at the time your ancestor lived? What local or global events were affecting them? Even if your ancestor wasn’t a soldier during a war, they might have had to deal with rationing or changes in their job. Add historical details through copies of old letters, newspaper clippings, and photographs of their hometown at the time.

There were times I wanted to slap Liz because her desire for answers made her do stupid things! But this was a fantastic read and I loved it. These authors do an outstanding job and I would have loved to read it in one sitting. It alternated between two POV’s…Liz’s and each set of victims. The victims were so fascinating, I couldn’t wait to get to their next chapter. This killer was a monster! The Family Tree is a heart warming and poignant story about family, the trials and tribulations of life.

The 15 Best Genealogy Books According to Readers

Memories — Include a special section in the book for stories from living descendants that detail what they remember, what life was like growing up, and their lives today. The Tri-State Killer has been abducting pairs of women for forty years, leaving no clues behind – only bodies. Branan spent nearly twenty years combing through diaries and letters, hunting for clues in libraries and archives throughout the United States and interviewing community elders to piece together the events and motives that led a group of people to murder four of their fellow citizens in such a brutal public display. Her research revealed surprising new insights into the day-to-day reality of race relations in the Jim Crow–era South, but what she ultimately discovered was far more personal. Stories to Tell: This company isn’t a DIY online publisher in the sense of the above services. Instead, it offers assistance with editing, design and publishing decisions, especially for biographies, memoirs and family histories. Overall, I think it’s great if you enjoy thrillers and if you are interested in a fast-paced read about how a DNA database could be crucial in a decades long ongoing case.

Mixbook: Among the 84 family-oriented design themes are memoir, cookbook, reunion and family history. Amjad is a British Muslim of Pakistani heritage, living in Northern England. The story opens in 1993 when Amjad’s wife has just died in childbirth, leaving him with a 10-year old son (Saahil) and a new-born daughter (Zahra). Just as Saahil finishes University, a cataclysmic event occurs which changes all of their lives forever and it is hard to see how they can ever recover from it. The book follows the ups and downs of the family’s fortunes over a 25 year period. Yeah,’ Ken said, yelling over the sizzling onions and pointing the screwdriver at his friend. ‘What she said!’ Whilst I rushed through the book, reading it in a couple of days, and thoroughly enjoyed the exciting plot, I can’t say I liked Liz much. Her attitude towards her parents that had raised her since being a baby was atrocious. I understand she was hurt for not being told she was adopted but she went over the top and was quite whinny too which made her feel a lot younger than she was. What Did They Mean by That? A Dictionary of Historical Terms for Genealogists by Paul Drake (Heritage Books): Includes definitions and descriptions of more than 3,000 words.Plus, if you are giving this as a gift to another family member, you’ll be giving a one-of-a-kind gift that you can guarantee they won’t get from anyone else! Organizing and Preserving Your Heirloom Documentsby Katherine Scott Sturdevant (Betterway Books): The easy-to-follow guidelines and ideas for preserving your family papers in this new book will help you begin creating a documentary volume. Photographs The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy, 4th edition, by Val D. Greenwood (Genealogical Publishing Co.): Knowing how to use records properly for research is essential in genealogy. You can identify various classes of records and determine their accuracy, as well as learn about the recently released 1930 US census. Caring for Your Family Treasures: Heritage Preservationby Jane S. Long and Richard W. Long (Abrams Publishers): Keep your treasured family memories safe for generations to come with the suggestions and information in Caring for Your Family Treasures. There’s advice for preserving heirlooms and antiques such as dolls, toys, military mementos, jewelry, ceramics and many other family artifacts. As far as debut novels go, I can probably count on one hand the number of debut novels I’ve read that actually live up to the hype. In my opinion, the majority that are popularised are done so based on low standards of representation by us as readers. The Family Tree, however, is one of the most gripping debut novels I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I am in complete awe at Hussain’s mastery of invoking many an emotion through her storytelling. Boldly diverging from the overdone culture-bashing, self-hate dramatisation of the British Pakistani community that seems to be the only thing we’re known for in popular media and contemporary fiction, The Family Tree is wholly refreshing and unique in its exploration of the historic and modern British Pakistani identity.
