Most of the products work best by embedding in the grass, providing the best base for the winter. Only some of the products can be installed during winter when you may already have a muddy problem. The rubber mats are laid straight onto the ground with minimal preparation. They are installed using pegs and ties. The mats can stop the floor getting churned up and destroyed and help make the shelter warmer. All of our matting is made from premium grade rubber of the highest quality.

Where we built the stables, we created a hardcore turnout area. Rough but clean hardcore was tipped first, to a depth of about 3', then road planings were tipped on top to smooth it out. This has been superb for three winters so far, and extends to one field (slopes down into the field). If you do require ground protection for an area which is mainly going to be used by vehicles please see our Heavy Duty Grass Reinforcement Mesh or Bodpave. Our rubber gateway mats are made from heavy duty solid rubber making them hard wearing and durable field matting. These grass mats make an excellent surface to eradicate the problem of muddy gateways & muddy grass walkways providing an anti slip surface for areas such as gateways, walkways, wash areas and turn out areas. When installed onto grass, the mats soon get covered by grass leaving the area looking natural yet retaining grip and drainage.

I honestly think they will be your best bet if you're on clay - grass mats etc. will be a false investment; old carpet will help (I use that with a lot of success, but not in 'high traffic' areas or anywhere they're likely to gather speed and slip) but carpet won't last. All the mats described above will occasionally need cleaning to avoid the smell of urine building up underneath them. Whilst they are designed to drain well they will occasionally benefit from cleaning underneath to avoid odorous smells. If you wish to avoid this cleaning, the bonded and sealed mats are the ideal choice for you as they do not allow any liquid to penetrate beneath them. Our range of honeycomb Field Mats provides excellent grass protection, especially when used together with our under-mat stabilisation mesh (M9). This combination of a rubber mat and mesh has proved ideal where temporary protection of grass or lawns is required. These are the more traditional style of rubber matting for stables, they are heavy duty and ideal for laying on a wide variety of flooring, from earth to concrete and cobblestones. Being solid rubber they are heavier than the EVA stable mats and EVA top mats and need more than one person to move around. But once laid they stay put and drain well. This product can also be used for gateways requiring vehicle access providing certain criteria are met. The vehicles must only be travelling over the mats in a straight line. Due to the friction between the rubber mat and the rubber tyres on the vehicle, turning leads to excessive shear forces and the mats will simply rip.
