Description

Displaying the full force of toddler hormones, she refuses to eat her breakfast egg, throws off her shoes, yells in the supermarket, and lies down in the pavement, refusing to move. Today I woke up and Bob was crawling around MY ROOM, licking MY JEWELLERY, so I shouted GET OUT OF MY ROOM! This hilarious rhyming book by Kes Gray and illustrated by Garry Parsons is a brilliantly silly one to share, especially at bedtime in the run up to Christmas.

Other than that it’s just a brilliant story, with an opportunity to use different volumes of your own! I work part time in a local primary school as a Teaching Assistant where I whisper stuff like 'I never had to know about fronted adverbials' to small children. The book has helped my daughter understand that sometimes when she gets angry for no reason and it may be normal as the girl inn the book does this as well. I bought this for my 17 month old Daughter but to be honest i think its a bit old for her yet so she will probably enjoy it when she is more like 3. Once her own children had started school, Rebecca began an MA in Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art and had her first picture books commissioned at the end of the course. Bought for a shouty 3 year old, who laughed as he realised that is exactly what he was like, so we turned a shouty day into a laughing day instead.

Bella is having one of those days - her biscuit is broken, she has a hurting foot and ballet is TOOOO itchy for words. It has become iconic for us, and so helpful for helping toddlers/pre-schoolers and those that encounter them, understand that we all have ‘big shouting days’ sometimes, and that’s ok. Great for teaching little ones that if they're having a tricky day, it will pass, and mummy will be there for them for a cuddle when they're ready. But Mum gives her a kiss and a cuddle, and reads Bella her favourite bedtime story anyway and at last Bella says 'sorry' for her big shouting day. She was engrossed in the story and there were lots of opportunities to further discussion and relate to her own experiences. My children don't empathise with Bella not because they haven't had tantrums – believe me, they have – but because it's all just a little too realistic, without any humour thrown in for good measure. The message seems to be that we all have our off days, but that's OK, because tomorrow it will all be better. It's a great way to open up dialog about what to do with their big emotions and how to handle it and that's especially more important now than ever.
