Description

The first written mention of the word kubb however is dated to 1931 in a book by a Gotland native ethnologist, visiting the island Fårö. Test your accuracy and co-ordination skills with this sustainable FSC® 100%-certified wooden Kubb game.

The key objective is to keep them close to each other (as to be able to hit more than one with a single throw of the batons (Kastpinnar)). This game is for play indoors and outdoors but it is not weatherproof or showerproof (warranty may be void if game is exposed to damp or rain). Kubbs" are placed at both ends of the pitch, and the "king", a larger wooden block, is placed in the middle of the pitch. However, for informal games, it really doesn't matter - up to 6 players can be in a team and it's even OK to have more people in one team than the other!

Kubb is a lawn game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks by throwing wooden sticks at them. It is worth noting that in serious play, or in games where the players are skilled, or where money is bet, the use of twine or strings should not be encouraged, as the ability to reach common agreement over whether a kubb is “in” or “out” promotes sportsmanship and a sense of fair play, which is a trademark of this unique game.

No other markers are required to demarcate the field's boundaries, although markings that do not interfere with game play are allowed (such as chalk lines). Throws must be under-handed, and, if the batons spin, they must spin end over end at no more than 45 degrees from the vertical. Again, kubbs that are knocked down are thrown back over onto the opposite half of the field and then stood. Otherwise, the game is won by the team that first topples all the sticks on the opponents half of the court and then topples the King from behind the baseline.

Sören Wallin has identified the Swedish game kägelkrig (as described in a 1911 encyclopedia [3]) as essentially the same as, and the forebear of, kubb. This game requires skill and accuracy, if this is not your strong point then it's a great way to learn. Once a team has lost all its pins, it acquires possession of the king [pin], and if it too is felled by the ball, the game is lost.
