You wouldn’t think of just asking God for it, would you? And why not? Because you know you’d be asking for what you have no right to. You’re spoiled children, each wanting your own way.

With some changes in line with Government restrictions, social guidance provisions, and the kind help of volunteers, three of the fields - Belfast, Cardiff, and Gateshead - were relocated to the National Memorial Arboretum Field of Remembrance. Supporters were able to visit the field at Lydiard Park in Swindon and the Arboretum, but the Westminster Abbey Field of Remembrancehad to close in line with local restrictions. Please do not bring large bags or cases as this will delay your entrance into the public viewing areas. Our network of overseas branches and volunteers may be available to place a wreath on your behalf at a number of cemeteries around the world.

The Christian cross can often have other symbols on it that carry a special meaning. For example, you sometimes see the letters IHS emblazoned at its centre. This stands for the Latin phrase Iesus Hominum Salvator which means ‘Jesus Saviour of the World’. These letters have also been interpreted by some as standing for the phrase ‘I have suffered’, which has been of particular comfort to those who have lost those they love through tragedy and war. In the United States, Veterans Day is commemorated on 11 November; there is also a Memorial Day on the last Monday of May. Remembrance in the UK today is very different than it was 100 years ago, but the poppy remains a humble, poignant symbol of Remembrance and hope. Brigadier General LJ Wyatt, the commander of British troops in France and Flanders, selected one of the bodies at random. The ones that weren’t chosen were reburied while the solitary selected figure was repatriated via Dover on the HMS Verdun. The number of bodies involved in the selection process is disputed, with some accounts saying four, others six. Plan your journey. Please be aware that Westminster Underground Station will be particularly busy during the morning of Remembrance Sunday. Please use alternative stations when travelling to Whitehall, including Charing Cross, Green Park and Embankment. When and how you choose to wear a poppy is a reflection of your individual experiences and personal memories. National two minutes silence marked by the firing of guns from King’s Troop on Horse Guards Parade. Cenotaph Service commences.

Anna Guérin was christened ‘the poppy lady from France’ for her work establishing a network of French war widows who made artificial flowers to raise funds for various causes. In 1920 her work resulted in Poppy days in several US states and she promoted the flower as a symbol of Remembrance in the USA and Canada. The poem inspired American academic, Moina Michael, to campaign for the poppy to become an official symbol of remembrance across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK. Her cause was helped by Anna Guérin, who persuaded the founder of the British Legion, the former Field Marshal Douglas Haig, now Earl Haig, to adopt the poppy as an emblem of British remembrance. Once the glue is dried, curl up or scrunch up the edges of each circle layer to make the layers of the petals for the poppy.
