Casting Kelsey Grammer is a coup for the film, the erstwhile Frasier capturing both the weariness of a struggling pastor and the joy of seeing new life.

It is fascinating as a text, but also richly sinister as it attempts to seduce the viewer with a narrative about redemption and love. However, UK Christians will be disappointed to learn the film is only available on Netflix within the United States, for now. The movie stars Kelsey Grammer, best known for his roles in the US sitcoms Cheers and Frasier, as Pastor Chuck Smith, a key figure in the Jesus movement. The film focuses on the 1970s, when Laurie and his girlfriend Cathe (Anna Grace Barlow) are drawn to the movement as they grow disillusioned with the druggy ways of the other flower children they’ve been hanging out with. That’s when we see the barriers of polite Christianity exemplified by Smith slowly being broken down by the chaotic, surprising grace shown in Frisbee.

But it’s been widely hailed as the ‘least cheesy’ Christian film out there, ‘not preachy’ and praised for showing how a Christian life can still be a hard one. The story follows the unlikely friendship of straight-laced pastor Smith and Christian hippie Frisbee, as they work together to evangelise to thousands of young people, before a rift breaks the pair apart. The ace in the hand of Jesus Revolution is its terrific cast, who transform the narrative from a history lesson into a moving, thoughtful drama. Some are quick to judge these unwashed converts with their histories of drug use and free love, while others see an outworking of the grace of God. This insight alone makes the film worthwhile, and I’m certain that many Christians will resonate with its message of how the gospel crosses social boundaries. Together with Pastor Chuck Smith (Kelsey Grammer), they open the doors of Smith's languishing church to an unexpected revival of radical and newfound love, leading to a Jesus Revolution that changed the world.
