My initial tasting of Jura 10yr was not great. However, I felt compelled to try it again, as I (unlike some of you) actually bought my own bottle! When I tried it the second time, I realized it was not as dull as I first thought. In fact, I rather liked the spicy finish. The saltiness wasn't harsh, and it wasn't a peat monster like its Islay cousins. And honestly, this Origin has improved in the couple of months since I opened it. I'm getting stronger oak scent now then I did at first. I like that it stands alone, among other big island distilleries that get way more (in some cases) deserving press. The Isle of Jura Origin is the reincarnation of their standard 10 Year Old. But you know as well as I that batches can vary significantly and the last time I tried this one was in 2010. Seeing that I will be trying a few Jura today, I felt it was a smart thing to do start with this entry level malt again. I bought a bottle of Isle of Jura 10 year old in my local whisky specialist shop. I talked a bit about this whisky with the salesman, and he said, that among the poeple going into the shop 50% likes Jura and 50% not at all. I also read here the comments, but I felt, that I need to try it myself.

A whisky only Jura could make, born of our island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from our home. Crafted in exceptionally tall stills and matured for 10 years in America White Oak ex bourbon barrels. Nose: Wafts into the nasal passages with a delicate, fruity aroma, characterized by orange, sweet apple and oak with faint touches of ginger, sea salt and light smoke. That gradually moves in a heavier, richer direction as the fruit gives way to a sweet, earthy vanilla and the oak takes on a peat smoke quality with touches of baking spices.Nose: Somewhat weird nose. Caramel and a strong whiff of a pungent musk. Probably the worst nose of any single malt I've tried. Clove, ginger, and strong molasse The Isle of Jura - west of the Highlands and northeast of Islay, is not that easy to reach. It takes several planes, trains and... a ferry (and the best part of the day) to reach it. That may be part of the charm of this magical island. George Orwell resided there while writing his classic 1984 and called it ‘an extremely unget-at-able place’. Palate: Oily and subtly spicy at first, before notes of earthy vanilla pod and chocolate-covered raisins develop. Inspired by our history and our island home, our whiskies reflect the unwavering passion and tenacity of the islanders, so it tastes distinctively better because it matters more to those who make it. Mouth: weak, with a vague sweetness (honeyed cereals, fudge and something of a sweetened tea maybe), joined by increasingly unpleasant flavours. Porridge, a little rubber and bitter notes. Dry, earthy notes. Aniseed. Leather. No fruits whatsoever, making it rather unsexy.

A Whisky Only Jura Could Make, Born Of Our Island And Still Produced Today In A Bottle Originally Shaped To Withstand The Roughest Of Journeys From Our Home. Crafted In Exceptionally Tall Stills, Matured For 10 Years In American White Oak Ex-Bourbon Barrels And The Fresh Sea Air With A Further Enhancement From The Finest Aged Oloroso Sherry Casks. The nose is rather distinctive, in my opinion, as compared to the many other single malts in my collection. Though, it has softened a bit over time after the bottle has been open. Either that, or my nose is better trained! I get a nice combination of sweet honey and caramel, some tequila-like notes, and citrus fruits. Nose: A light nose with a good helping of cereal. Otherwise there are some apples, etc. A basic ex-bourbon nose that hardly exudes originality on the first whiff. On the second whiff, I get a somewhat herbal or vegetal note. Ginger and wisps of salt are here, too. There’s a bit of sharpness here, but it never loses its balance. Finish: dry and tangy, saltier a bit briny, for me it clings to the sides of my tongue which is a strange sensation that tequila thing never really lets go. With water little bit of coco, dry again, maybe malty but it’s very thin.

While many distilleries create either peated or unpeated whiskies, Jura 10 marries together the best of both for a truly unique Island Single Malt that is subtly smoky with a sweet Sherry cask finish. It is matured for ten years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels with an aged Oloroso Sherry cask finish. On the nose, the whisky is light and fragrant, with notes of fresh flowers, gentle cinnamon and nutmeg notes, an undercurrent of fresh grains, and the slightest hint of smoke. Largely standard stuff, aromatically speaking, but it all comes together cleanly and invitingly.Palate: Some white pepper and some ginger are the first things I notice. Butter. Heather. There are some oak notes that follow. This is a bit saltier than expected. Salty, but not dry and briny as some maritime whiskies tend to be. Some mild citrus notes come through, too. The one I'm drinking now, however, is much more mellow and has a much nicer mouth feel whereas the previous one had a bit too much burn on it. I like the peppery finish but, for some reason, I can barely smell the stuff unless I put my nose a millimetre above it! Hi Josh, I just tried this for the first time, and fortunately it was a sample at a friend’s house. It was one of the newer bottlings; never had the older. My overall impression was “meh.” Similar profile/aging to Highland Park 12, but the HP is comparably priced and way better: more flavorful and complex.

Situated just across a narrow channel from Islay on southern end of the Hebrides, Jura has been home a distillery since 1810. While the first incarnation of the distillery closed in 1901, it reopened in 1963 and remains the sole distillery on the island of about 200 residents, according to Jura’s announcement. Jura 10 Year Old. A whisky only Jura could make, born of our Island and still produced today in a bottle originally shaped to withstand the roughest of journeys from our home. Crafted in unusually tall stills, matured in the fresh sea air and American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and finished in the finest aged Oloroso Sherry butts – it’s the perfect marriage of Highland and Island styles.” That's the bad news, the good news is that smell doesn't translate onto the palate. Although not much else does. This doesn't have tremendous character, its balanced but not in the sense of balance big flavours, more in the sense of not too sweet, not too acidic, not too rich, not too thin. It doesn't do anything wrong, but it doesn't do anything particularly right either. Smoked apricots; toffee, nuts, spice, malty sweetness, cinnamon, apples and a light bit of earthy malt, copper and bitter cocoa. I'm well aware others have not had good experiences but mine has only been positive. On the nose I'm getting malted and honeyed coffee beans with light floral and white pepper notes. Neat the arrival is light and silky, really well balanced with a distinct three-phased experience: Light heather and caramel, followed by white pepper, smoke and then a leather and sort of flinty finish. I'm also getting cigar tobacco, parchment and citrus aftertastes with coffee beans.Jura 10 bottle is totally transparent and colorless, which leads us to this peculiar note about the hue: if you see the bottle, the scotch looks amber to reddish with some brown highlights, but if you pour a dram, it's straw yellow with a slightly greenish cast to it. Of course, the latter is the one I use as a reference.
