It sounds almost like a joke, and maybe it indeed is: A necrophile and a cannibal meet and are instantaneously fascinated by each other, believing to have found a kindred weirdo, the antidote to oneself. I walk back to the living room and pick up my discarded shirt, taking my cigarettes out of the pocket and lighting one. Shamelessly, I'll admit that more than being disturbed or repulsed, I found myself laughing my lungs out while reading it.

Soon after the pair go on a date, the protagonist is nervous as he has a horrible track record with living women and when Helen invites him back to her place he goes.Even though it deals with extremely sensitive topics, this wasn’t anything I expected at all that ended up being a solid read. Now one thing to remember is that if so many people struggled with this book then you’re going to need to pick a reader who can deal with it if they’re performing for an audience, but the thing that actually struck me about this is that not only did he deal with the subject matter but at one point during a fairly graphic description he sounded like he was about to climax. It isn’t clear what happened to the protagonist whether he was caught or whether like Helen he worked his way up to murder.

Although nearly romantic by its promise of unapologetic acceptance, the plot of Dead Inside soon goes extreme (what else? First let me start my review by saying to check the trigger warnings before reading this book and it is very dark and contains themes like necrophilia so please be aware of that when reading this book and my review as I will be discussing it. Dead Inside fell under my radar from a one-star review on how disturbing this book is, and her feelings are valid.I won't include a list of them because (spoilers) but also because I can just say that if you think of a trigger, it's present in this book. This book is horribly revolting but this author is so unbelievably talented that I can't stop myself from reading more. Dead Inside” reminded me of that as just when I thought no way does this book get even crazier and gorier it sure enough did. I thought based on the hype that this would be the rare book that would be “too much”, but honestly, I frequently found myself bored and wishing for the story to end. The references to better books was groan-inducing, but I did laugh out loud when our main character said Fight Club is his favorite Palahniuk.
