Description

Understanding Dachshund color genetics can be difficult. A dog will have one chromosome from each parent which means that they have 39 pairs of chromosomes.

Dilute colors like blue and isabella may also have health issues like alopecia and skin cancer. White dogs may have health issues, including blindness and deafness. We will also discuss the diluted colours and the difference between a colour and a pattern in dachshunds. Finally, we will talk about genetic health concerns associated with specific hues and patterns. Dachshund Colour Chart There are three types of coats for the Dachshund and most of the dogs will have 2 copies of their coat type genes, but some dogs will carry more than one type of gene. The two main one-colored Dachshunds are red and cream. There are other one-colored Dachshunds including blue and white. Red Dachshunds Red Dachshunds The Isabella name in the diluted colors is another name for the fawn color of the coat. Sometimes this color is called just Fawn. There are 15 recognized Dachshund colors and six recognized patterns, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC) breed standard. The Isabella (Fawn) and Cream dachshund is mostly light silvery-brown with cream-colored points above the eyes, around the nose/muzzle, on their feet, chest, and under the tail. The cream coloring is a light buttery yellow with no hint of red. They will have light grayish-green to hazel eyes. The nose and nails will range in color from pinkish-chocolate, to a light brown (light liver-colored). Wheaton The second one which is the long-haired Dachshund is distinct for its long straight coat. Meanwhile, the third type called wire-haired Dachshund has curly or coarse hairs that are prone to knotting and matting.

Chocolate Dachshunds don’t have any cream or tan markings. They are solid dark brown. This is another non-standard color, and it’s extremely rare. Fawn Dachshund (Non-standard) Source: @harlowtheisabelladachshund / IG Dachshund’s coat color doesn’t affect the way they behave. That, I am sure of. I have worked with a lot of breeds before and not once did I observe a certain color to be more aggressive or more passive. The Isabella Dachshund (also called Fawn), is a dilution of the Chocolate Dachshund, making the coat a solid, beautiful, light silvery-brown color. Eye color will be a light grayish-green, to light hazel. Nose and nails will range in color from a pinkish-chocolate, to a light brown (light liver-colored). Isabella (Fawn) and Tan There are no health problems that are known in the Brindle pattern of the Dachshund. A dog that has 2 copies of the K gene will always have Brindle pups. Piebald Dachshunds Piebald Dachshund The Piebald pattern is not as known as other patterns and is not considered an acceptable pattern, but many people have imported Piebald’s around the world.

Give AI a Try!

This dog has a combination of the piebald and the brindle gene. This is a very rare pattern and will have both stripes and markings on a white coat. The UK kennel clubs and the AKC (American Kennel Club) are very strict on the dachshund breed standard, and any deviation from the hues listed above is not permissible by them. You will want to keep this in mind if choosing a puppy from a litter to develop a show career or breed it in the future.

The main reason for the strictness on coat colours is that introducing some of the rare hues can lead to the offsprings with genetic health conditions. ( For instance, double dapple dachshunds). The Dapple pattern Dachshundhappens when the Merle gene “ m” is present. This is the same gene that causes Merle Collie and Harlequin in the Great Dane breed. The cream Dachshund will be blonde with no red tints at all on the fur. The cream gene is a recessive gene, and it means that all dogs can carry this gene without being cream-colored. Dachshunds come in over 30 different colors and color combinations ( patterns). That’s even more colors than the 25 that french bulldogs have! The most common colors include: The Dapple pattern causes there to be patchy coat colors. This can affect the base color that happens in the cream colors and the red colors. This usually is only seen in puppies and cannot often be seen in adult dogs.Dachshunds can be many colors and the color genetics in the Dachshund can be very confusing because of the different varieties of colors that go with the genes. The Isabella (Fawn) and Tan dachshund is mostly light silvery-brown with tan points above the eyes, around the nose/muzzle, on their feet, chest, and under the tail. The tan coloring is the same shade as that of the red dachshund. They will have light grayish-green to hazel eyes. The nose and nails will range in color from pinkish-chocolate, to a light brown (light liver-colored). Isabella (Fawn) and Cream

These shades are presented in six patterns which are brindle, dapple, sable, piebald, brindle dapple, and double dapple. Genes can be in more than one form or Alleles, and these depend on what genes that your dog gets from the parent breed, and this will decide the color of the Dachshund.
