From mumbles and inexplicable guffaws to outright ownership of shady deals, the characters try to make it obvious if you’re along the right lines – should you have enough evidence. Both games have their pluses and minuses, and can probably happily coexist on the same game shelf if you are a fan of the genre. She didn’t enjoy it enough to play again and it was somewhat laborious to read so much out loud to each other and take turns. There are so many stories to cover, the Exposition Universelle, the Summer Olympics, the opening of the first metro station, but as a Lavel, a family famous for solving crimes since the Middle Ages, you are much more interested in murders, kidnappings, and robberies.

Using the same set of physical components (a board and cards representing locations, characters, and items), the Chronicles of Crime app lets you and your friends step into a world of mystery and play out your investigations. This means that you might not want to scan every item during an investigation or ask every character about every other character if you want to solve the investigation quickly. The logic of the cases is less abstract than some of the puzzles in the Exit games and therefore you always feel like you should have solved something and rarely that something was obtuse or unfair. Chronicles of Crime definitely feels more frantic, from the constant scanning to even the music in the app. As you progress, anything new will reinforce or clarify past knowledge, as well as give some more direction, too.

Characters can have different responses depending on what you’ve shown them before and where you meet them. All of this may sound gimmicky and important questions rightly need to be addressed: why does this game need a physical element if it is so app-heavy? The 5 cases that come with the game are great, but sadly as they are a one-and-done experience you're likely to run out of content fast. is a standalone entry in the series that adds in prophetic dreams that you as the main character has, leading you too clues and lines of enquiry. One player can keep the phone, and control everything, but as each player has a go investigating the 360 images and also the map spreads out with location cards around the table, it’s easier to pass the device running the app around and have discussions about the next steps.Reviews you can trust: To ensure you're getting a fair, accurate, and informed review, our experienced team spends a significant amount of time on everything we review. We loved the feel of being a reporter and someone who watches the case unfold as opposed to the one with the cuffs and baton. I’m not going to spend any time comparing and contrasting the two, but I will quickly say that they feel different enough that there is room in your collection for both if you are a fan of the genre. It’s also worth noting that sometimes you also need to wrap up story elements, by presenting evidence to certain characters. The opportunity to investigate the crime scene often takes two looks as the first time you’ll be basking in the beauty of the architecture and visuals.

Apart from those few roadblocks, however, the mystery and investigation usually flows and develops steadily.

It’s possible that if you don’t like previous versions, you’re unlikely to like this one, because I didn’t find anything particularly new or refreshing to it – because it’s merely a change of setting and some new investigations to complete. This will allow you to ask for autopsy info, electronic forensics, physical evidence forensics and a criminal profiler. Being a journalist helps you be among the first ones to know about them, and your wits often make you the first one to find the perpetrator. To start with, players usually investigate the scene of the crime, with a 360-degree image in the app.

I would have preferred more cards, as it would be much easier to keep things organized and to be quickly referenced. To interview them you simply scan them and then any evidence or characters you want to ask them about, the only limitation is you cannot directly ask them about locations. Not everyone will, but I couldn’t resist popping back to find out why the case conclusion had asked me those questions, given I thought I’d worked everything out…admittedly though, this is limited. This is what happens when you get a really good set of friends together willing to immerse themselves into the story. The mechanics through the app work smoothly and are enjoyable to use, there’s nothing stopping further games in new settings or timelines. The other downside of everything being contained in the app is that it’s much harder to review stuff. When you think you have all the pieces of information necessary to solve the case, you press “Solve the Case” in the app and answer a series of questions.
