Description

The new Aputure 120d II boasts an incredible luminance of 88,000 lux at .5 meters away with the Aputure Fresnel. With an approximate brightness equivalent to a 1,000 watt tungsten light, the 120d II is nearly 25% brighter than the 1st gen 120d, making it competitive with some of the highest-grade studio lights on the market. The original C120D was revolutionary for its compact size and high build quality. The C120D II now takes this a step further with a new round of upgrades. While the original 120D was rated at around 6000K, the new Aputure 120D II gets a more industry standard 5500 Kelvin rating for easier matching with daylight and other fixtures, while still retaining the versatility of the universal Bowens mount, ultra-silent temperature control system, wireless remote, and the same carrying bag. The most notable of these upgrades is its power unit – the C120D II is now powered by a single, all-in-one power box. Made of aircraft-grade aluminum but maintaining its lightweight build, a single power unit means less cabling and power components so filmmakers spend less time setting up their light, and more time being creative. The C120D II boasts an incredible luminance of 135,000 lux at 0.5 meters away with the Aputure Fresnel. You might find yourselves repeating this procedure several times. Having the ability to lower or switch off or on the lights from behind the camera saves time. Final verdict: Is the Aputure 120d II worth it?

Lighting that can be controlled remotely would be ideal for solo photographers. Nothing is more inconvenient than walking over to the light and returning to the lens to see how it appears. While the C120D II boasts an impressive studio grade build quality, it still weighs in at just over 2.2kg (4.85lbs) allowing filmmakers to easily take this light anywhere without having to worry about the transportation issues that frequently come with larger tungsten fixtures. The Brightest or the Dimmest With the additional Aputure Fresnel, the LS C120D II has a brightness of 135,000 lux at a 1.6' distance.

The 120d Mark II uses 140 watts of power, which is 20 watts as much as the previous 120d, but the tremendous performance boost from an already powerful device is a brilliant innovation. For me, one of the best new features of the 120d II, is the ability to dim the light from 100% all the down to 1%, (wheras the original 120D and 120T could go down to 10% max) meaning the 120d II is capable of being both the brightest and dimmest light on your set. A 25% output increase is nothing to scoff at. I first turned on the 120D MK II and lit most of the downstairs of my home with the bundled reflector mount. Before the neighbors started asking about alien invasions I turned it off and decided to try it in a few situations in real filming environments for this review. It still doesn’t quite have the output for most exterior daytime applications (depending on cloud cover and time of day), but for that, I suggest you use a 300D MK II anyway. The C120D II has taken the precision controls of the C120D and expands upon them even further, allowing for dimming seamlessly from 100% all the down to 1%, meaning the C120D II is capable of being both the brightest and dimmest light on your set. Supports wireless DMX adapters to control light with Smartphones, Tablets or Laptops (not included.)I also found the overall fan noise to be less, versus the 120D MK I. You shouldn’t have any issues using this light during quiet interviews where the fixture is placed close to your subject. The LS C120D II uses 2.4 GHz tech to turn on and off and control brightness remotely over distances of up to 328 feet. If you have another Aputure light, you can use the same remote to control all of the company's lights. This is convenient because you may control up to three separate lights with one remote. DMX is the worldwide industry standard for film & television studios, theatre, broadcast, and all forms of digital networking systems. The 120d Mark II comes with DMX capability, allowing studio creatives to maximize their range of uses for their lighting arsenal. You've learned about all the pros and cons of Aputure 120d II in this article. What's the next step? A re-designed yoke construction accommodates an expanded range of motion with over 330 degrees, letting you angle and point your light anywhere needed. An improved user-friendly handgrip design also allows for highly intuitive controls. Featherweight Design

The C120D II comes with DMX capability, allowing studio creatives to maximize their range of uses for their lighting arsenal. The 120d Mark 2’s DMX system is also pre-programmed with special lighting effects (i.e. thunder, fireworks, etc.) and allows users to input their own effects, creating a light that has truly limitless possibilities. One of the most notable upgrades to the 120D II is its new integrated controller/power unit. Made of aircraft-grade aluminium but maintaining its lightweight build, a single power unit means less cabling and power components so filmmakers spend less time setting up their light, and more time being creative. In terms of overall build – the mounting yoke is identical to the 300D MK II and allows for much-improved freedom of movement. A big improvement is also the combination of the power/controller unit. Fewer components just lead to faster setups and more shots per day. Unfortunately, the 120D MK II doesn’t come with a similar light stand mount to the one that ships with the 300D MK II. Perhaps this could be created as an additional accessory in the future?

Except for the color intensity it emits, the 120d is similar to the 120t. The 120d's housing is made entirely of aluminum and goes through over a hundred fabrication phases, according to Aputure. You might find yourselves repeating this procedure several times.
