This separation from fine art still carries a legacy of the ‘domestic’, ‘craft’’ and the ‘feminine’ which was seen to marginalise ‘women’s work’ in stitch and paint. What connections am I making to that past? Not only does Dave create Remembrance Day Poppy Art, in memory of those who have served or fallen in recent, modern day conflicts, his Poppy Art is also often inspired by historical military events. We also have a range of reading activities on Remembrance Day and the World Wars. A highlight is our First World War Reading Comprehension for KS2 which is differentiated, so it can be enjoyed by students of all abilities. Such reminiscence can be healthier than you think. Despite nostalgia's bittersweet rap and the oft-heard advice to live in the moment, studies suggest that the occasional detour down memory lane can give your spirits a significant lift. Members of the Royal Family will pay tribute alongside Members of the Cabinet, Opposition Party leaders, former Prime Ministers, as well as the Mayor of London and other ministers. Working on top of a base of plastic sheeting to protect the table, large pieces of fabrics are laid down as a foundation. I then add smaller pieces as I work on top of the larger pieces of cloth pasting each layer as I go. As I worked I became aware of how the pieces acted like ‘stops in a journey’ or ‘snapshots’ of a given time, connecting time away travelling and working, to the more intimate and familiar space of home.

The plastic-free poppy is created from bespoke red and green paper manufactured by specialist papermaker James Cropper. Making, travelling, teaching and writing is a juggling act, which when combined with building work at home, meant my own stash of materials was in storage and inaccessible and space was at a premium.

Please note, this is a veterans’ parade, therefore serving Armed Forces personnel are not permitted to take part. Civilians cannot take part unless they meet the eligibility criteria above. Also involved with those efforts was a French woman, Anna Guérin who was in the UK in 1921 where she planned to sell the poppies in London. Personalized Mother’s Day Memorial Portrait, Customizable Sympathy Painting Commission, Thoughtful Remembrance Gift for Stepmom This is typical of the many-faceted approaches I use to finding inspiration which is discussed in depth in Stitch Stories and in this short article, Finding Inspiration for Textile Art, both featured on Textileartist.org.

From laying Remembrance Day poppy wreaths to watching parades, there are lots of ways that people in Britain commemorate Remembrance Day each year. All work always begins by and constantly references location drawing and laying out the collected materials. Some of these materials would have been printed and dyed upon in previous sessions.
