The other Benedicts – Luz, Uncle Bawley (a cattleman allergic to cattle), and the two children – are as real as a touch of Ferber irony allows to be. And there are the neighbors, ranchers described most aptly as Texans all. In the 21st century, TV Guide gave the film four stars out of five, writing of James Dean's performance: "This was the last role in Dean's all-too-brief career– he was dead when the film was released – and his presence ran away with the film. He performs his role in the overwrought method manner of the era, and the rest of the cast seems to be split between awe of his talent and disgust over his indulgence." [23]

The Fleshlumpeater: The leader of the nine man-eating giants and the largest and most horrible of the bunch. He shows no mercy for eating so many humans over the years, and is happy with what he has done and would continue it if he could. Voiced by Don Henderson in the 1989 film and motion-captured by Jemaine Clement in the 2016 film. Edna Ferber's writing is so different from what I've been reading lately. At first, I thought it was a little awkward; she doesn't use many commas, and likes to string several adjectives or nouns together. But as I kept reading, I fell more in love with her writing and the book. Describing the ostentatiousness of Jett Rink's hotel, in which everything is branded with his initials: "Downstairs and upstairs, inside and out, on awnings carpets couches chairs desks rugs; towels linen; metal cloth wood china glass, the brand JR was stamped etched embroidered embossed woven painted inlaid." It's hard to even type that, my hands want to put in the commas, but how much stronger it is when it's written that way. My favorite piece of writing comes toward the end of the book, when Ferber is describing the modern goods in the city store windows and refers to "the most acquisitive of vacuum cleaners." That's just gorgeous; I love that phrase.

Loke Battle Mats' Little Book of Battle Mats - Wilderness Edition - is the ideal companion to The Wilderness. Granted that it was written in the early 1950's it still has men and women in their stereotypical roles. There was no gender equality in this story and in certain parts it definately screams out. But aside from that, it is mostly a novel of Texas. And in Texas people do things bigger. At times Ferber's writing made me feel as though I was expirencing the ranch land first hand.

As I mentioned, for our size book, six supports were needed; if you go bigger you may consider making more. After all six supports were cut, we made two groups of three and lined them up to see how much difference there was in size. If you've been super precise in your cuts they should be very similar. However, if you're like me, some cuts were off by a half inch. I used the smallest support as a pattern, traced along the edges, and trimmed the bigger supports down. Will a half inch of extra make a difference? Yes, always yes. Do your best to get these accurate now, as it'll make the whole book look so much more realistic when its all done, and it will be way easier to glue. Remember, not all six of the supports have to match perfectly, just the three supports on each individual side. Who says the book is opened exactly dead center anyways?
