Vine weevil damage Vine weevil is a garden plant pest problem that can be difficult to control. Gardeners with vine weevil will need to take measures to control them.

Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer can be applied to pots or direct to the soil anytime from March to November. It is highly recommended to apply first in the spring and then again in the autumn to prevent the vine weevil grubs from overwintering in the soil or compost, ready to wreak havoc again in the following spring. Note that the nematodes are only active when soil temperatures are above 5°C. For the most effective control, simply add the nematodes to a watering can and apply directly to the open soil or directly to pots, tubs and containers. There are now several methods of treatment available including the traditional pesticides but there are also some eco-friendly options too. Pesticides can now be considered the last resort, as they can harm the environment and also be dangerous if used in areas frequented by children or pets. So a safe, natural biological control method is one solution worth considering.Nemasys Vine Weevil Killeris both safe and highly effective in the control of vine weevil grubs. The treatment consists of natural nematodes, a tiny parasitic worm that feeds on the vine weevil larvae. Keep out of reach of children. Always read instructions before use. Wash splashes off skin immediately. Keep off skin. Do not breathe spray. Wash hands and exposed skin after use. Their mouths don’t allow them to start biting in the middle of leaves, so if you see this it’s another pest, such as a caterpillar or slug. Wilting plantsThey’re the best treatment for vine weevil, since it’s a safe, natural treatment with no chemicals. In a heated greenhouse, vine weevils can feed and breed throughout the year, so all stages of the life cycle can be found. What can I do to protect my plants from vine weevils? Biological controlfor the larvae is available as microscopic insect pathogenic nematodes. Several species and combinations are available ( Steinernema kraussei, Heterorhabditis megidis, H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae). They are availablefrom suppliers of biological controls and as sachet formulations available from some retail outlets. They are suitable for use in containers and in the open ground. For best results apply in August or early September when the soil temperature or potting mediais warm enough for the nematodes to be effective ( Steinernema species 5-20ºC/41-68ºF Heterorhabditus species 12-20ºC/ 54-68ºF) and before the vine weevil grubs have grown large enough to cause serious damage There are three ways of controlling vine weevil: chemical, biological control and physical barriers. Controlling vine weevil grubs Large items are sent via a standard 48L (48 hour large) service. Large items take from 2 working days to arrive.

More serious is the damage can becaused by the soil-dwelling larvae, which are plump, white, legless grubs up to 10mm (about 3/8in)long with pale brown heads. These eat the roots of a wide range of plants andcan bore into tubers of cyclamen and begonia, and into stem bases of cacti and succulents. They can kill woody plants by gnawing away the outer tissues of the larger roots and stem bases. Most plant losses occur during September to March, when the grubs are becoming fully grown. BugClear™ Ultra Vine Weevil Killer is a systemic insecticide compost drench for the control of vine weevil and other pests in pots, hanging baskets and other containers. Pesticide control The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivar selection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner.

Vine Weevil larvae are a major pest for ornamental garden and household plants. The larvae feed on plant roots causing sudden wilting or killing your plants. The larvae are most active from July to October as they feed on your plants to fatten up for over wintering, while they develop in to adults the following year. The nematodes can give poor results in dry or heavy soils. They work best in lighter soils and open potting composts, such as peat or coir. Nematodes can be used safely on all edible and ornamental plants British weevils are common pests that feed on over 200 species of plant, including fuschia and rhododendron, as well as berry fruits, like strawberries and raspberries. Use the measure provided to mix 60ml of BugClear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer with 1 litre of water in a watering can or mixing vessel. Vine weevil can feedon a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors, but can be especially damaging to plants grown in containers. It is a verywidespread andcommon insect. The adult weevils eat leavesduring spring and summer, but it is the grubs that can cause the most damage over autumn and winter when they feed on plant roots. This damage can resultin wilting andplant death.
