Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. This was a good opportunity for a different setting and the writing is great but I'm looking forward to getting back to Norfolk in the next novel.

The characters are strong and believable, the plot intriguing and well developed, and there is plenty of atmosphere. And I'm delighted to say that while this series is beginning to flag a bit, it is still a solid 4 stars. But now death has found her, with the news that her long-time friend Dan Golding has been killed in a house fire.

When she arrives in Lancashire, Ruth discovers that the bones reveal a shocking fact about King Arthur and that the bones have mysteriously vanished. Despite really enjoying the mystery, the historical events the mystery involved and thoroughly enjoying the characters a couple of things were slight minuses for me. As this book begins, Ruth receives word that an old friend from her university days, Dan Golding, has died in a fire. To sustain a great series, as Griffiths and Harris do, requires a lovely balance of various elements: firstly, there must be an element of surprise in the mystery, its context and motivations; secondly, an element of familiarity, in the detecting figures; thirdly, those familiar figures, if they prove introspective about their lives, which Ruth and Harry prove to be in every volume thus far, and the events occurring around the crime, grow more compelling. The book itself would be a definite "five stars", but I just cannot do the same for this audiobook as a whole. He claims to have been a good friend to Dan’s, but when Dan’s discovery threatened his Neo-Nazi beliefs, he killed him. If you had been warned not to do something especially given past scenarios nobody would put themselves and their child at risk.

Secondly, her on-again-off-again love interest, DCI Harry Nelson is a gruff, at times chauvinistic, copper, more lethal, subtle, and intelligent than meets the eye.But now death has found her, with the news that her long-time friend and ex-colleague Dan Golding has been killed in a house fire. He is also a druid and lives in the middle of the forest, in a cottage that used to belong to one of the women executed for being a witch. They’ve all been terrific so far and I’m awfully glad I have quite a few to go before I await them, hopefully, annually. Captain Charles Rathlyn, a racehorse trainer stakes everything he has on his best horse for a major race and loses. In Mary Higgins Clark Award–winner Griffiths’s uneven third Magic Men mystery (after 2016’s Smoke and Mirrors), magician Max Mephisto and Det.

I just finished this fifth book in the Ruth Galloway series, and I find myself in that place of grief for readers who have read all there is published so far in a favorite series. During Kate’s baptism Michelle discovered that the baby was Nelson’s, and she forbid Nelson from seeing Kate and Ruth again.Having stirred the memories and commiserated, Ruth is somewhat surprised to get a handwritten letter from Dan the very next day.
