Nordés is Galicia’s very own premium gin, which was created as a celebration of its native land and has quickly become a revolutionary gin, taking the familiar to the next level with its authentic feel and exquisite flavour. It was an excellent gin when served that way, and it’s still an excellent gin in a regular gin and tonic. It’s made from Albarino grape spirits, rather than the more common grain spirit, and a whole slew of botanicals and herbs that includes, liquorice, eucalyptus, lemon peels, hibiscus, juniper, and more. And the blue and white bottle which is rather striking, is designed to mimic the traditional porcelain products made in Galicia. With Nordés, what you get on the nose is pretty much the taste – fresh and fruity with flavours of peach and strong floral notes. As well as 6 botanicals which grow wild in Galicia, it also has 5 which are sourced overseas, each one macerated separately until the exact aroma is achieved. To that they added 6 local botanicals, lemon verbena, bay leaf, mint, sage, eucalyptus, and Glasswort (a plant that grows along the seashore and in marshes and is also known as “pickle weed”). A rather intriguing Spanish gin made with an Albariño-grape-based spirit, rather than your more commonly seen grain-based spirit, along with 12 botanicals including lemon peels, hibiscus, liquorice and eucalyptus.A white wine grape, the Albarino (aka the Cainho Branco), which grows plentifully in Galicia, and is traditionally used to make brandy.

Wine spirit, the soul of the gin, is produced by using Galician Albariño grapes, and this distillate is macerated with 11 botanicals, 6 which are native to Galicia, Samphire, Sage Bay, Lemon Verbena, Eucalyptus and Peppermint. That said, as I’m unlikely to repurchase anything I thought was less than very good to excellent, it would be by chance or at the request of a distiller who thought I rated them very unfairly - BUT even then, whatever you get will always be my honest opinion.

To create a gin of true provenance, every aspect needs to speak to the region and Nordés complete their Galician gin with striking packaging. The recommended garnish is three white grapes, but it also works really well with sage and a liquorice stick/cardamom seeds. While it may not be to everyone’s tastes – particularly those who are juniper-forward diehards – this is a contemporary-style gin worth shouting about, full of flavour and Galician provenance.
