Beth has to overcome her own nerves and self-doubt to lead her mismatched team to save the situation. Magnificent middle grade sci-fi with a great range of characters, fantastic world-building, exciting premise, and believable chain of command. I wasn’t even expecting a lot from it seeing I’m a bit older than the intended audience and there weren’t that many reviews, but Wow.

Suddenly it’s up to thirteen-year-old Beth and her friends to navigate through treacherous and uncharted territory to reach safety. The ship was turning gently, and as it turned, it revealed an enormous scorched rupture near one of the engines.This is a breath-taking book that leads you into the very heart of space and shows how big our universe actually is. I really enjoyed once this got itself going with everything that was happening and how you just wanted to see what was going to happen next!

My favourite scene in the book was when they tricked Captain Murdoch by saying there were mines around the ship when they were actually fireworks and blowing them up with the ship's guns so they could escape. I think Beth was such a great main character she is a 13 year old girl who would like to command a ship of her own one day, but she never thought it would happen at the age 13 and after an event that kept all the grown ups in sleep mode. Just for interest, if you’ve ever seen any of the wonderful images of a gas cloud in space known as the Horsehead Nebula, then it sits in this part of the sky, just below the Belt star Alnitak – although you would need a big telescope to see it. The ship has to make a series of Jumps through space time to shorten their travel time and when these jumps happen everyone is put to Sleep and woken after the Jump. Perhaps the most studied star-forming region in the sky, the Orion Nebula is an easy first target within Orion. This book was well written and created stunning images in my mind and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in science fiction.It doesn’t matter what kind of story you’re writing, characters and their problems are what make a story. What seems like a straightforward journey quickly turns wayward when a mysterious Event leaves a group of six kids to bring a broken ship back to safety, all while uncovering why their circumstances don’t seem to add up. But it is in fact a great example of the beauty and symmetry that lies at the heart of the universe.

Harper is delighted to be offered an apprenticeship at the Grand Wondria Music Hall and Theatre to study the dramatic and magical arts. I enjoyed watching her character development unfold, as she goes from someone who is hot headed and clearly not a good leader grow into someone dependable and reliable. Emerging from one of these, Beth discovers that none of the adults can be woken, and that she is now acting captain with a ‘crew’ of fellow youngsters.If you've got the villain down here doing his nasty stuff then you'd probably better introduce him further up so that gives you a way to spread your ideas out. The beginning kind of dragged for me, just a little, in that Beth was kind of a frustrating protagonist to read from. The dynamic she has with her friends (and those that aren't exactly her friends) on the Orion was organic.
