Dirie redeemed herself somewhat in my eyes with her commitment to activism, but I still felt I couldn't really connect with her. There is the dealing with a rapist, the set up marriages for legal status and how she coped with the very private matter of her FMG. A somewhat interesting storyline and a disturbing issue (FGM) that must be addressed, but just poorly written all round. I was under the impression that this memoir strongly focused on the author's experiences with FGM and her work with the Desert Flower Foundation to advocate for women's rights in Africa.
