In a peaceful hidden valley, Lady Agatha sets about a happy new life bringing up the Yeti children, teaching them to speak and insisting on perfect manners. But as time moves on, the valley is threatened by the arrival of helicopters, tourists and property developers, and Agatha, now an old lady, begins to worry about the safety of her naive and innocent charges, who she fears will be captured by the Yeti-hunters.Discuss any new/interesting vocabulary that you encounter. Ibbotson probably wrote the novel in the 1994, and did not wish for it to be published as it was not the kind of ghost story she usually wrote. Her family decided to go through with the publication after her death, and the book was edited for publication by her son Toby together with Ibbotson's editor. [2] Plot [ edit ] Now, a posthumous novel THE ABOMINABLES is being released with artwork by Fiona Robinson. Robinson's illustrations are a great match for Ibbotson's words and really express the good-natured silliness of the yetis that star in this cross-country adventure. THE ABOMINABLES was completed by Ibbotson's son and editor, but there is no noticeable difference from Ibbotson's usual voice. Whenever I find out that a book has been published posthumously, I feel rather sad. Unless the manuscript was completely prepped and ready to go with a bow on top, what you are reading is not the purest vision of the author. It's probably been filled in here and there by somebody else.

Summary: Lady Agatha Farlingham is captured by a yeti, and agrees to bring up his motherless children. Many decades later danger threatens, and the yetis have to flee their idyllic home. Agatha decides the only place her beloved yeti family will be safe is at her ancestral home, in Hampshire. But she is old now: who will take them there? The novel is full of whimsy, charm, and sly humor. The yetis will tug at readers’ heartstrings and make them laugh. The writing is lean, witty, and subtle. Ibbotson manages to touch on ethical messages of human rights, advocacy, and environmentalism without being obvious." Summary: A century after a yeti captures Lady Agatha Farlingham and takes her to a hidden valley to raise his motherless children, tourism threatens their peaceful existence. Young Con and Ellen take these educated and civilized yetis across Europe to Lady Agatha’s home in England. Eva Ibbotson (born Maria Charlotte Michelle Wiesner) was a British novelist specializing in romance and children's fantasy. The Abominables is the sweetest, funniest and most moral of stories...This funny book will make children laugh aloud and read it over and over again for its kindness and humour. For older readers, it presents an unavoidable parallel with the inhuman treatment shown to the Yetis and the cruelty shown to so many vulnerable and persecuted people today. This extra layer of meaning will ensure that as readers grow older, they will return again and again to The Abominables and take from it more and more. --Armadillo MagazineI would highly recommend The Abominables to readers that are fans of the late, great Eva Ibbotson. Readers that enjoy animal stories, humor, and adventure will greatly enjoy the story. I am a little unsure on my age recommendations as I think readers around 8 and older would be my best guess. However, there is quite a bit about animal rights and cruelty so some of the youngest set might be upset by. However, (spoiler) every character gets their happy ending so that might be enough to make the mild upset worth the big happy that is sure to follow. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads.
