Ignoring him, Hulda focused on the flames. “See how they’re not actually extinguishing? Likely Whimbrel House does not possess elemental magic.” She made a mental note and stepped off the stool. There was an enclosed porch just behind the kitchen, but with the floor bubbling like tar, she determined it best not to explore it at this time. I’ll credit that to my predecessor,” she said with a tone of apology. “It’s a lone house out of the way, sparsely inhabited over the years, and its denizens hardly carved their names into the walls.” She knit her fingers together. “I know you’ve only just returned, but could you leave today? It’s only two hours by tram and boat. I’d rather not let it sit.” Clearing her throat, Hulda finished, “It would be best for me to see the house and determine the source of the magic, if you don’t mind.” Merritt wondered if his parents and siblings had been called into this office as well, or if Mr. Allen had made the trip out to New York to read the will to them there. Admittedly—and Merritt loathed to admit it, even to himself—he’d hoped they’d be here. Death often brought people together, and—

All right, I lied--one final pull quote: 'The warmth wafting off him, enveloping her with spring when she was surrounded by winter.'Even though I occasionally thought it moved a little slowly, I truly liked this book and would recommend it. Mr. Fernsby nodded and followed her. The shadows darkened significantly as she entered, trying to choke out the light coming from the large window on the east wall. They did a decent job of it. He pushed objectivity into his thoughts. Perhaps they had all come to Baltimore to see Grandmother before she passed. Then again, Merritt had, at best, only seen his grandmother once a year during his childhood, and he couldn’t quite remember the scale of sentimentality between her and his mother. They were very much flesh and blood humans. Both had their weaknesses and insecurities, but they were also kind and sweet and endearing. I loved them. Honestly Whimbrel House Series is so unique, spectacular, the idea is special, very engaging and heartwarming story with lots of fun, the characters are exceptional and I LOVE it.

Merritt is an author who unexpectedly inherits a house even though he has been estranged from his family for years. But the house’s magical abilities are above anything he could deal with. Merritt Fernsby is communionist for sure (besides other magical gifts he may have from his unknown ancestors), He can communicate with Owein (Oh, how much I love him!) and also with, trees, mouses, moths, spiders and you know, all... The doorknob jiggled. “Who are you? I tried breaking a window, but—oh God, it’s looking at me again.” She didn’t have to wait long. Miss Steverus, the young receptionist, bounced in as Hulda placed the third tab, announcing, “Ms. Haigh will see you now.”

The similarities to the first book also extend to the story-writing, where we get a chapter from three different POV - Merritt, Hulda, and Owein. But unfortunately, once again, I couldn't help but feel that the antagonist's complete potential wasn't utilized. They were certainly not as threatening and intense as the "evil force" in the first book, and we got a lot less magic from them than I would've liked. A lot of the focus is on certain side characters, such as Myra and Hulda's pursuit of the truth to find her, that the reader doesn't feel as intimidated by the villain as they should. The house creaked significantly as they returned to the reception hall. Wielding her lamp, Hulda opened the door by the stairs to find the toilet. She stepped inside, examining the mirror, but found it ordinary. I've been putting off works by Charlie Holmberg forever but I'm so glad I decided to read this one! It was a delightful read from beginning to end, and had me voraciously finishing it in less than 2 days. While the book sounds quite serious in its premise, (and it is so), there are plenty of humorous scenes courtesy Merritt and Owein, thereby creating the perfect balance of emotions. As the duo tries to find the source of magic, they also battle a sense of attraction between them. However, unseen larger forces are at work, threatening to get revenge and settle scores. Can Hulda and Merritt survive the fight?
