I only mention this so that you know where I'm coming from in case you are not a fan of the movie as I think if you like one you will like the other and, conversely, if you didn’t like the movie, the book may not appeal to you as much. Through Goldman's asides to the reader throughout The Princess Bride, he aims to provide a sense of what the “original” book is like: overly complex, far too long, and in all ways unreadable to anyone but a Florinese scholar. The next three chapters are short and deal primarily with the wedding preparations of Prince Humperdinck.

The Princess Bride: Full Book Summary | SparkNotes

These were found throughout the book and always made me laugh, but Goldman has an editorial note explaining that if the parentheticals bother you, you should skip them. The book contains a whole Chapter on Inigo Montoya that provides details of his childhood and his Father’s original encounter with the Six Fingered Man (this is dealt with in a very brief conversation in the movie). Westley reaches Buttercup before she commits suicide and assures her that she is not yet married as the ceremony has not been completed due to the fact that she did not say "I do". Adapted by William Goldman from his 1973 novel of the same name, it tells the story of a farmhand named Westley, accompanied by companions befriended along the way, who must rescue his true love Princess Buttercup from the odious Prince Humperdinck. I mean, how do you get any better than Andre the Giant and Billy Crystal's performance of Miracle Max?One day a band of Florinese royalty appear on the farm, and while watching them watch Westley, she falls in love with him. But the movie was based on an equally fabulous book, and if you’ve never read it you are really missing out, because the book has all the humour, joy and romance of the movie and more besides. While “abridging” The Princess Bride, Goldman must learn to connect with his son Jason, whom he's criticized heavily for years due to Jason's weight. All of the interruptions in the Narrative where the author is explaining why he cut out whole sections of the original Morgenstern novel (the fictional novel of which this novel was supposedly the abridged “good parts”) were very funny and made the book a unique experience. It tells the story of Buttercup, an exceptionally beautiful girl who rises from unlikely beginnings to receive the dubious hand-in- marriage of the barrel-like Prince Humperdinck.

As with any book to movie adaptation, The Princess Bride strayed a bit from its original source material.Several actors from the movie provided voices for their video game counterparts, including Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya, Wallace Shawn as Vizzini, and Robin Wright as Buttercup.

The Princess Bride Quotes by William Goldman - Goodreads The Princess Bride Quotes by William Goldman - Goodreads

Buttercup is having nightmares and pining away for Westley, who in turn is still pining away for her. Westley's screams draw Inigo and Fezzik to the scene and down through the many dangerous levels of the zoo of death; upon finding Westley's body, they enlist the help of the King of Florin's former "miracle man", a magician named Miracle Max. Regardless, while Goldman is in California working on the screenplay for The Stepford Wives, his wife Helen reminds him that it's Jason's birthday and Goldman spends two hours and several hundred dollars on the phone to get a copy of The Princess Bride delivered to Jason. You mean you'll put down your rock and I'll put down my sword and we'll try to kill each other like civilized people, is that it?To be honest, it just messes with the purity that is the original and can leave you with a sour taste in your mouth. When Goldman revisits the book himself, he discovers that what he believed was a straightforward adventure novel was in fact a bitter satire of politics in Morgenstern's native Florin, and that his father had been skipping all the political commentary and leaving in only "the good parts. The book's actual roots are in stories Goldman would tell to his daughters, one of whom had requested a story about "princesses" and the other "brides". He has won two Academy Awards: Best Original Screenplay for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and Best Adapted Screenplay for All the President’s Men (1974). While the novel The Princess Bride presents Princess Buttercup and Westley's love story as a historical account, in the film, it's simply a fairy tale.
