In the end, Ari learns that perhaps his greatest passion has been in front of him the whole time, and he just needed a little push to see that. Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band, if he can just convince his dad to let him quit their struggling family bakery. Particularly when it comes to the baking, this helps capture the feel of the process, the time spent assembling and creating, or the emotional effect of a moment.

There are a lot of very real problems, as well, along the way, like dealing with some pretty manipulative people— exes and *ahem* bad friends -___- (just one, mayybeeee sort of two? Being that this is a romance comic, the argument presented within the text and illustrations is at times lost within the love story. the rooftop flat-on-your-back star-gazing experience (it may have been cloud shapes or ripples in water for you) in which one learns from the other's prior thoughts or experience.

This is both a delicious foray into the world of baking and young love and an endearing, realistic tale of two teens helping one another grow. Their dream is to move to nearby Baltimore, where the music scene is hopping and they might have a chance at the big time. The artist’s use of color is especially striking: His battle scenes are ample, bloodily scarlet affairs, and Polyphemus’s cave is a stifling orange; he depicts the underworld as a colorless, mirthless void, domestic spaces in warm tans, the all-encircling sea in a light Mediterranean blue and some of the far-away islands in almost tangibly growing greens.Given the similarities in setting, season, and mood, this might be a good followup to This One Summer. Ari is young, and he battles with having his entire future stretched out before him and all the big decisions that come with graduating from high school. This really comes to light when Ari starts to hang out with Hector and begins to stand up for himself, we see Cameron becoming more demeaning to Ari, until it reaches a breaking point and Ari chooses Hector over Cameron (again unwritten) because Hector is actually a viable friend and future boyfriend/lover. Written by Kevin Panetta and illustrated by Savanna Ganucheau, this is a heartwarming story about finding yourself and stumbling upon love (oh, and baking.

Beautiful artwork depicts characters coping with life's increasing responsibilities and is especially sumptuous when focusing on the yummy desserts. Ari’s friends are also awful people; they talk shit about Hector, they talk shit about each other… the entire friend group seemed so toxic. At one point one of the characters is being a dick and the other character is like “Hakuna your Tatas sister and don’t blame me for this”, well he did not exactly say that but the idea is that this is one of the first times I see this in a novel and I think it should be a more prevalent occurrence!

Savanna's has also adapted the novel 'Turtle in Paradise' into a graphic novel that has a release of May 2021 from Random House Graphic. Enter Hector Galeai, a recent graduate of culinary school who has moved up to East Beach from Birmingham, Alabama, to take care of some family matters. Imagine reading and watching Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook with a queer couple, not changing anything about the story.
