At F1.4 vignetting is pretty strong, roughly -2.7 EV (on par with GM 50), microcontrast is already excelent. The minimum focal distance is just 40cm, making the lens even more versatile and able to produce a unique perspective close to the subject. This makes it easier to take close-up and dramatic shots of food, portraits and nature. Weather-Sealing design Would be very interested in a LoCA / bokeh comparison with the 45mm F1.8 if you still have that lens (I actually consider the 45mm a lens that renders nicely). Autofocus cameras have been around since 1977, so it might seem strange that Zeiss is still doggedly making manual-focus lenses. However, the range of Milvus prime lenses certainly gives a hands-on, feel-good factor.

Autofocus accuracy is more critical in very wide-aperture lenses and the Nikkor does well in this respect, unlike Canon’s f/1.4 counterpart. Sharpness is average at f/1.4, but stop down to f/2.8 and this lens delivers superb sharpness across the entire image frame.

Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE – Image quality

Nonetheless, I totally agree with your last post that costing 1/3 the price of the 50/1.2 GM, this is quite a bargain on account of overall performance, as is the case with many Samyang AF lenses. Such exciting times for us E Mount users, it's great to have choice especially affordable and good value ones. L’ergonomie est bonne avec un bouton de maintien de mise au point paramétrable sur le boitier et un commutateur de mode qui permet de basculer la bague de mise au point en une bague d’ouverture sans clics très pratique en vidéo. Malheureusement pas de bouton AF/MF The multi coatings applied to this lens seem quite effective, suppressing flare and keeping contrast levels reasonable. Strong point sources of light shining into the lens will cause a loss of contrast and plenty of ghosting, but only in extreme examples of this kind of lighting. This lens tends to give a noticeable warm tone to images, and contrast is muted, when compared to other modern lenses, which sometimes produces a look associated with vintage manual focus lenses.

FWIW, some do not share my opinion but I have never been a fan of the 45/1.8 rendering - tons of sharpness and contrast but that's about all it has going for it - I compared it in some detail to the Sigma 45/2.8 (which IMO produces a far superior look) here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1616217/1#15153308Sony Sonnar T* FE 55mm f/1.8 ZA bokeh test – top left f/1.8, top right f/2.8, bottom left f/4, bottom right f/5.6 Using the electronic first curtain shutter at large apertures and high speeds results in ugly bokeh. Our lab tests are carried out scientifically in controlled conditions using the Imatest testing suite, which consists of custom charts and analysis software that measures resolution in line widths/picture height, a measurement widely used in lens and camera testing. We find the combination of lab and real-word testing works best, as each reveals different qualities and characteristics. See more on how we test and review at Digital Camera World. The minimum focusing distance is just 0.40m (1.31ft), so it is versatile and possible to produce a unique perspective close to the subject. This makes it easier to take close-up and dramatic shots of food, portraits, and nature. When comparing to Samyang 45/F1.8 CA and LoCA is a bit better controlled but the improvement is pretty small. Quite a long way from GM 50/1.2, than again you can't have everything for not even 1/3rd of its price. However, Korean lens maker Samyang has stepped up to the plate with its first autofocus lenses: the AF 50mm f/1.4 FE , AF 14mm f/1.8 FE wide-angle and, most recently, the AF 35mm f/2.8 FE. Colour fringing is visible in the JPEG (left) but can be suppressed in raw processing (right) Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE – Resolution Manchester, United Kingdom – Thursday 4th November, 2021, Holdan, a specialist distributor to the professional video, broadcast and photography sector, has today announced Samyang’s updated and improved version of its first autofocus lens designed for Sony-E mount. It is exclusively distributed by them in the UK and Ireland. Renewal of Samyang Optics’ first autofocus lensIf your current firmware version is lower that the version being offered below, please update your firmware now. This Samyang FE mount lens works brilliantly with mirrorless cameras like the Sony Alpha A7S III, a camera with already extraordinary low-light capabilities. The wide aperture on the Samyang AF 50mm f/1.4 allows for the maximum amount of light to reach the full-frame sensor. Create high-quality sharp images even in low light situations. The manual focusing ring is a pleasure to use, with damping that is smooth and neither too stiff, or too light. Those who shoot video on a DSLR and tend to use manual focus anyway, may find this lens ideal due to its excellent manual focusing action and ability to isolate a subject through shallow depth of field. Closest focus is 45cm, which is fairly typical for a lens of this focal length and aperture. 77mm filters can be used with this lens and the filter thread does not rotate, which makes it ideal for use with graduated and polarising filters.

In the center of the frame, the Samyang is fairly sharp even wide open with maybe a little improvement in contrast to closing down. I think he also mentions in his video that the auto focus of the samyang II was a bit better than the clunky AF of the zeiss planar.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art: Autofocus

If your current firmware version is lower than the version being offered below, please update your firmware now. I saw no real problems with flare when shooting into the light. Sony Alpha A7R IV, Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM, 1/1000sec at f/8, ISO 100. Image credit: Andy Westlake Overall the build quality is very good , high quality plastic and a very nice textured focusing ring but is below Sony GM or Sigma ones. What is surprising is the very low light of the lens only 420g so much lighter than the v1 Already wide open sharpness in the center is excelent with a small improvment when stopped down to F1.8 There are a wide variety of designs available at various price points, but the Samyang does look very good value, especially considering its excellent standard of performance.
