But don't let this detract from what is a stunning performance by the Spektor 2 5.1. It's evidently deserving of all five stars within moments of plugging it in.

The Spektor 2’s low-loss drivers are made from the company’s signature lightweight wood fibre material that’s also found in its higher-end speakers. The embedded wood fibres provide an uneven structure, which Dali states will help minimise resonance, capturing accurate details from your audio source. For purposes of this review I will treat the two speaker systems as if they were in a head to head battle between speakers offered by two rival companies. Both are superb performers – the Missions excel at clarity and precision, while the 3020s offer an enviable combination of refinement and build quality.

These Dalis tread the middle path between these rivals brilliantly, while adding greater verve and involvement to the proceedings. This review will pit the DALI Spektor 1s against the DALI Menuets. Both are smaller than shoe box size mini-monitors designed for widely differing purposes and markets. The Spektor 1s are a budget choice aimed right at the rear surround sound market. The Menuets are up market and mate with higher-end DALI offerings such as those in the Rubicon range. Another fundamental is the lowering of mechanical distortion. This to make sure that the connected amplifier will not be exposed to a larger than necessary challenge, causing loss of detail in the signal even before it has the chance to reach the loudspeaker. The tweeter also stands out, thanks to its ultra-lightweight weaved fabric material which weighs less than half the industry standard. If you were to touch it, you’d barely know it was there, though we wouldn’t recommend it, for fear of damaging its delicate structure. On the surface these may look like a posh pair of Spektor 2s, and there are certainly some strong visual similarities. But start listening to the Oberon 1s at the end of a suitably talented system and you’ll find they’re capable of sonic feats the junior speakers only hint at. But aside from the limitations of size, they produce a quality of sound only the very best at this level can get close to. The dimensions of these tiny boxes is 250 X 150 X 230 mm. They are 86 db efficient and are rated as 4 ohm speakers. They can handle a range of power amplifiers from 20 to 100 watts. They have a 4.5 inch mid-woofer and a soft dome tweeter. As we’re enveloped in an impressively spacious soundstage, effects flit from one side of the room to the other at pace, facilitating a true surround experience. The use of four Spektor 2 speakers as front and surround channels helps the familial character around the room, but the Spektor Vokal feels just as at home among its Award-winning brethren. Sensibly for something so small, these speakers sound right at home close to a rear wall. Their low frequency performance stays balanced and tuneful when used this way.

Larger rivals will have more scale and sonic authority, but they won’t be anywhere near as accommodating as these Dalis when it comes to placement or blending into a room. It’s the Oberons’ ability to reveal so much information, but also arrange it in a musically cohesive way that really makes them shine. You will experience a well-integrated sound, even when listening significantly off-axis. As you are often not seated directly in front of the loudspeaker when listening to music, this is important. At just 24 cm in height, and a compact 19 cm in depth, the Spektor 1 is definitely on the small side for a hi-fi speaker, but with the help of a port on the rear of the cabinet, performance suffers negligible losses and with a little bit of rear wall enforcement, these speakers are able to sound like a much larger speaker than their physical dimensions would suggest.
