As a top tip, if the beachside cafes are too busy (which they almost certainly will be at the weekend), head into Portobello High Street which has a number of quality bistros as well as a few interesting galleries. You’ll find Longniddry Bents by following the A198 towards Gosford House which is a beautiful neoclassical manor house with extensive grounds that are open to the public at no cost. The Portobello Swim Centre is a popular leisure facility on the Portobello Promenade which offers a range of aquatic activities. The Victorian building is home to a 25-meter pool, a teaching pool, and a Turkish bath.

One less-known fact about Prestonpans is that it has a couple of (admittedly rather small) beaches. Another gorgeous beach in East Lothian with a mixed habitat of sand dunes and marshes which hold a healthy population of wildfowl.Completing the accommodation on the lower level is the master bedroom and en-suite bathroom. On the upper level there are four further good sized double bedrooms, and a family bathroom with feature window. Towards the middle of the beach near the Tumbles Gymnastics Centre, visitors can view the Portobello Pottery Kilns, two traditional bottle kilns that are the last remaining examples of their type in Scotland, while 1/3 mile to the south they’ll find the Portobello Swim Centre, a historic Victorian building that houses a modern 25-metre swimming pool and a traditional Turkish bath.

In addition to the cafes on the promenade there are lots more on Portobello high street which is just a couple of minutes’ walk away. Get yet another angle by climbing to the top of St Abbs Head, a chalky cliff that looks out over the village below. It’s just a 30-minute climb from the village, offering you panoramic vistas of the chalk cliffs to the north that are home to hundreds of seabirds, or the colorful toy-like houses in the village of St Abbs to the south. The beach on the eastern side of the harbour is twice the size of the west beach, though it has large stretches of shingle so isn’t quite as nice to sit on.Remnants of its past can still be found during a walk along the beach including anti-tank defences and even the remains of a test submarine, though visitors should avoid the northern flats as the ground is very boggy and there’s a likelihood of disturbing nesting birds.
