Soft-grip handles – The best electric toothbrushes have a soft grip which can make them more comfy to hold and use. Soft-grip handles also lessen the vibrations you feel in your hand while brushing. Some toothbrushes combine the two actions and are known as rotating-oscillating. This is my personal recommendation to patients and what I use. Other mechanisms of action include pulsing and sonic. Pulsing and sonic are additional features to a rotating, oscillating or rotating-oscillating brush.” A bathroom with lots of hard tiled and glass surfaces for example is going to make the sound seem much louder than if you were brushing your teeth in a room filled with sound absorbing soft furnishings. There’s a big difference in how long rechargeable batteries last. In our tests we found the best lasted for more than 184 minutes – that’s about six and a half weeks of brushing twice a day for two minutes before you’d need to top up the power. Design, Functionality, and Features: Through every brushing session, we're paying attention to how easy the brushes are to hold and maneuver around our mouths. We note the size of the brush heads and how well they fit and get into all the crevices of our teeth and gums and whether they're comfortable or too stiff and firm. We go through all the settings, evaluating how helpful they are and whether they add or distract from the brushing experience. We use the built-in timers, note battery life indicators, and assess the "extras" it comes with (such as additional brushheads, chargers, travel cases, stands, and more). If the toothbrush connects to an app, we logged in, used it, and judged how helpful and/or clunky it was to navigate.

According to Dr. Schlenoff, if used properly, both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective. He says it's really a matter of personal preference. While they can both do a good job cleaning your teeth, an electric toothbrush comes with smart technology like pressure sensors, facial recognition, and brushing timers. If those features are appealing to you, you may prefer an electric toothbrush. The ProtectiveClean 6100 toothbrush stands as a testament to Sonicare's excellence, surpassing even the fanciest of Sonicares with its multiple settings —clean, whiten, and gum—and three intensity levels, and superior performance. Timers: The ADA recommends brushing for two minutes twice a day. Some brushes buzz every 30 seconds to let you know how much time to spend on all four quadrants of your mouth, while others have a two-minute timer to tell you when you can stop brushing. For a company that has designed a brush to be more environmentally considerate, I expected better, perhaps setting a new higher standard of 3+ years. A fall from even a few inches could potentially cause a cable to come loose or a part to become misaligned inside the handle. Office Home & Kitchen All Office Office Chairs Standing Desks Desk Organizers Seat Cushions Under Desk Ellipticals This unique electric toothbrush is from FOREO, a brand that usually makes high-tech face brushes. It has a similar ‘beauty tech’ vibe, with a smooth silicone handle and curvy design (two times stronger silicone than the previous version). It’s very simple to set up and use, and has an unbelievably long battery life of 365 days per charge (no, I don’t quite know how that works, either – but it’s true. I’ve never had to charge it). That makes it a great toothbrush for travel. To date we've tested over 40 electric toothbrushes to find the best ones on the market, doing three distinct tests with Oral-B, Sonicare, and a broader range of brands including Quip, Waterpik, Colgate, and more. Since we started testing electric toothbrushes, we've spent over 3,472 hours brushing our teeth with electric toothbrushes in the Lab (under the expert guidance of Dr. Marc Schlenoff, Vice President of Clinical Development at Tend) and at home. This is what we look for when we're testing each electric toothbrush. Pressure sensors: Pressure sensors act as a safety measure, says Dr. Dmitry Dolgov, a dentist at The Dentist Lounge in Santa Monica, California. They alert you when you’re brushing too hard and eliminate the chance that you’ll hurt your gums or tooth enamel. If an electric toothbrush senses that you’re exerting too much pressure while brushing, it may slow down its oscillations or display a red light on its base, which tells you to be gentler. Otherwise, it’s worth looking out for pressure sensors that can warn you when you’re pressing too hard while brushing – or not hard enough. Plus, a brushing timer that sends a pulse through the brush when it’s time to stop brushing (usually two minutes), or time to move to another quadrant of your mouth (roughly every 30 seconds).

Take a look at the results of our best water flossers test too, if you're looking to boost your regime even further. The following table lists out the noise (in decibels (dB)) of the quietest and loudest electric toothbrushes. Ease of Use: From the moment we open the box, we're noting how easy the toothbrushes are to set up and whether the settings are intuitive to use. Products with simpler assembly and out-of-the-box operation score higher than more complicated models.

3. Upgrade to a more quiet sonic toothbrush

If you’re new to electric brushes it will feel like it is giving a very thorough clean. The timer and pacer help you brush for the right amount of time I do not record the sound if the pressure sensor is activated. Some brushes might be louder or produce a different sound if excess pressure is detected. I exclude this to keep things fair. The Oral-B toothbrushes have a much more mechanical sound compared to the softer humming noise that a sonic toothbrush produces.
