The BFG has enormous ears so that he can hear ‘absolutely every single twiddly little thing’. Use this as a starting point for learning about sound and how we hear. Inside the jar, just below the edge of the label, Sophie could see the putting-to-sleep dream lying peacefully on the bottom, pulsing gently, sea-green like the other one, but perhaps a trifle larger. It actually amazes me rereading the novel now just how much of the action involves simply an on running dialogue between Sophie and The BFG, ranging on subjects from the constitution of dreams, to the number of amazing noises The BFG can hear with his giant ears, to a rather stark discussion of the ethics of the other giants eating of humans when contrasted against the way we treat our own species. It is surprising just how much terror and wonder, and how much of a boundless, colourful world Dahl can create simply by having a 24 foot tall giant and a little girl talking to each other. While Dahl's skills as a wordsmith and indeed word mangler are evident in all of his works for children, the BFG is arguably where he indulged in this most. Everything from small exclamations such as "by gum frog!" to alterations in usual phrases like "Let’s wait for the gun and flames to begin!" make the BFG, both the titular character and the work he comes from a truly delightful and unique reading experience.

If you look at a map of the world, there’s something you won’t see. Hidden far away is a place called Giant Country, home of the Big Friendly Giant (The BFG for short). the BFG snatches a little girl called Sophie from her bed. She gets taken to a cave and they come up with a plan to capture some mean, scary giants. Between 1986 and 1998, the novel was adapted into a newspaper comic by journalist Brian Lee and artist Bill Asprey. It was published in the Mail on Sunday and originally a straight adaptation, with scripts accepted by Roald Dahl himself. After a while the comic started following its own storylines and continued long after Dahl's death in 1990. [33] Stage play [ edit ] glasses. She was trembling like a leaf in the wind, and a finger of ice was running up and down the length of her spine. 'Ha!' shouted the Giant, walking forward and rubbing his hands together. 'What has us got here?' His booming voice rolled around the walls of the cave like a burst of thunder. 20This is the story of a little girl called Sophie, who helps a good giant called the BFG, save humanity from some horrid, vile giants, who eat people. I liked this book because although there are many funny parts, there were also parts that made me think, like the part where the BFG points out that humans eat pigs, and the pigs don't like that either! The BFG then explains that he must stay with her forever, as no one can know of his existence. He warns her of the dangers of leaving his cave, as his neighbors are sure to eat her if they catch her. The BFG then explains what he was doing with the trumpet and suitcase. He catches dreams, stores them in the cave, and then gives the good ones to children all around the world. He destroys the bad ones. The BFG then explains that he only eats snozzcumbers, which are disgusting vegetables that taste of frogskins. Another giant, the Bloodbottler, then storms in. Sophie hides in a snozzcumber and is nearly eaten by the Bloodbottler. Five things you never knew about the bfg". The Roald Dahl Story Company Limited . Retrieved 3 September 2020. A theatrical live-action film adaptation was produced by Walt Disney Pictures, directed by Steven Spielberg, and starring Mark Rylance as the BFG, as well as Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall, and Bill Hader. The film was released on 1 July 2016, to positive critical reception. However, the film was financially unsuccessful. The BFG was soo funny, I loved how the author spelled the BFG'S words all wrong, so it was like he was speaking a total different language! Sophie I felt sorry for, as she was an orphan, but then had the time of her life having an amazing adventure with the kind giant, the BFG.

I think it is a fantastic book but I don't like the bit when Sophie put a needle in the fleshlumpeater because I am a very screamish person For example, people from Greece taste greasy while people from Panama taste of hats. The giant then says that he will not eat her as he is the Big Friendly Giant, or BFG for short. Wellington?' Sophie said. 'Where is Wellington?' 'Your head is full of squashed flies,' the Giant said. 'Wellington is in New Zealand. The human beans in Wellington has an especially scrumdiddlyumptious taste, so says the Welly-eating Giant.' 'What do the people of Wellington taste of?' Sophie asked. 'Boots,' the Giant said. 'Of course,' Sophie said. 'I should have known.' Sophie decided that this conversation had now gone on long enough. If she was going to be eaten, she'd rather get it over and done with right away than be kept hanging around any more. 'What sort of human beings do you eat?' she asked, trembling. 'Me!' shouted the Giant, his mighty voice making the glass jars rattle on their shelves. 'Me gobbling up human beans! This I never! The others, yes! All the others is gobbling them up every night, but not me! I is a freaky Giant! I is a nice and jumbly Giant! I is the only nice and jumbly Giant in Giant Country! I is THE BIG FRIENDLY GIANT! I is the BFG. What is your name?' 'My name is Sophie,' Sophie said, hardly daring to believe the good news she had just heard. 26

Think about the measurements that we might use to work out how tall the BFG is. How could we measure how long his stride is?
