Description

You were the big sister, you were responsible for her and yet you put your own happiness ahead of that and let her drive home alone during a bitter, brutal winter storm.

This takes place in the mountains of Washington State and one of the biggest elements of this story is the snow storm. Her experiential background leaves an unsettled feeling about how the murder case was handled by the local police. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House—a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder—is the guilty party. I ultimately rounded up instead of down for this one because I've been reading a lot of thrillers recently and while they're all emotional to some degree I've not been brought to tears by any of them. The characters are really well written, I loved Tracy's loyalty and love for her dead sister, admired her for not giving up on seeking answers. Though the pace lags at times, the characters are richly detailed and true to life, and the ending is sure to please fans.

While working a case she receives notice that two hunters have found the remains of a body in the hills above her hometown, Cedar Grove. The second book in the Tracy Crosswhite series (which I will review soon) was released two months ago (the title is Her Final Breath). I loved My Sister’s Grave and was drawn in from the beginning, and can easily recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery. About a quarter of the way in, it started to sputter a bit: the characters began to contradict themselves. The town, including her father, said it was Edmund because he was in jail for a short 6 years for beating and raping a girl. Dugoni does a superior job of positioning [the plot elements] for maximum impact, especially in a climactic scene set in an abandoned mine during a blizzard―which is melodramatic but nevertheless effective.

My three stars should really be directed to Audible, who didn't let that be known in advance about the book--not intended to say anything against the author. I definitely enjoyed reading this novel, and had it not been for Christmas and the holidays , I would have devoured it faster. The premise of this book was really good, and Robert Dugoni’s writing excellent, I particularly enjoyed the courtroom scenes and loved how the story kept going back to the past, it all set a very atmospheric scene.Yes, a conspiracy is revealed, but it’s an unexpected one, as moving as it is startling, and it’s about now that the author ramps up the tension. I was enthralled by the small town secrets, manipulations, and the legal wrangling which was top notch, and something I really miss in crime novels these days. Tracy doesn’t believe the man they convicted of killing Sarah, Edmund House, was the right one because of issues with the evidence. She never made it home and although Tracy's car was found on a lonely backroad, Sarah was never found. I like my mystery/thrillers smart and aboveboard with no eyerolling adventures that take you in an illogical free-fall off a deluded cliff.
