It keeps the rulebook out of the main game flow, but in a place where I can glance/reach/read easily. The most immediate example of this perspective in action is the upcoming game’s board, which features a prominent volcano piece that sits in the middle.

Ultimately, I found King of Tokyo not fun as it tended to be too random, with too much time between turns. During gameplay, the volcano is used to roll the dice that determine the actions performed on each of the enemy monster’s turns – wherever the dice stop on the board decides whereabouts those actions will take place. After Godzilla had rescued and bonded with his new adopted son, and worked together with him to repel Kumonga, a second weather experiment was successful, and heavy snowfall forced Godzilla and Minilla to go to sleep. But, while it may never be the monster hit its predecessor was, the cheerful presentation and variety of game styles in King of Monster Island should still ensure you can have a whale of a time. Designer Richard Garfield is best known for creating Magic: the Gathering, but one of his other top titles is the superb dice chucker King of Tokyo– now reborn in a cooperative board game form as King of Monster Island. The original game is just a lightweight dice game using a Yahtzee re-roll mechanism to “beat the crap out of each other”… and that’s all it is.

A.s have ravaged the planet, an elderly Anthony Hicks mentioned releasing every monster on Monster Island in a desperate attempt to stop the creatures, but even they fell. Not being able to butt heads with another player over who gets to stay in Tokyo or New York does feel like a loss, with the risk coming from the less-human threat of the AI-controlled boss monster rather than your opponents. This splits the dice randomly across the six board segments (and, often, also sends them careening off thetable). Keeping with The Asylum's mainstay theme of mockbusters, it was released in the same year as the 2019 monster film Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

You get a choice of three foes of increasing difficulty, each of which has an easier and harder side to their monster sheet. The cards with the energy symbol on the upper left are player cards (Power cards): they can be bought with energy. The island had became very warm after an experiment with weather control systems had gone wrong, resulting in the appearances of Kamacuras, Kumonga and Minilla, who hatched prematurely from his egg after the Kamacuras attacked it. Players can lose King of Monster Island in one of three different ways: failing to stop the enemy monster from spawning three pylons, running out of minions to place on the board or seeing every allied monster fall in battle. The event cards are interspersed in the Power cards and offer some random events to keep the game “interesting”.That is one of the great advantages of these games though because each monster looks and acts the same before power cards are introduced, they are all interchangeable, so if you want Megamoth in New York or Gigasaur on Monster Island then you absolutely can. Although King of Monster Island can play 1-5 players, I can’t imagine playing this with 4 or 5 players. Unfortunately, in adding complexity there is even more randomness thrown into the mix and it too often feels like if you lost it was because of a run of negative event cards (this has happened several times) and some of the wins have felt a little bit easy just because the cards and dice ran your way.

King of Monster Island is NOT just a “ co-op King of Tokyo“: it’s a much more complicated co-op in the world of King of Tokyo. Monster Island was originally supposed to appear in TriStar's Godzilla 2, which is the cancelled sequel to the 1998 film. The major problem of King of Monster Island is that you may have to wait too long for your turn, which is why the game is much worse in 4-5 player games. Whilst Rodan's whereabouts were unknown, Anguirus would reappear the following year, having survived the fall and a subsequent journey under the Japanese countryside.Still, dice often rule the day, and the new event cards in the upgrade deck give the game additional unpredictability, resulting in a fair blend of chaos and strategy. Godzilla also broke into the Island to protect his adoptive father Nick Tatopoulos and pacified the monsters which gave a needed opening to regain control over the island. Players can also lock unused dice faces from their roll on their board space for other players to use later, another powerful tool to leverage in forward planning. Using the results of the dice rolled into the volcano, the Boss will move, activate their minions, and attack nearby monsters.
