Description

In the second half of the book, each featured bird has its own short field guide entry, including information on their biology, behaviour, habitat and distribution. The first edition was translated to 14 European languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch and German. Although I don't like books which rely on drawings only, this one makes up for it with thorough descriptions, habitat drawings (this is a unique and very nice touch), and a full list of rare and introduced birds, as well as vagrants towards the end.

The average size of each bird is included; in most species this is the length, measured from the tip of the bill to the tip of the tail, but in birds that are seen most frequently in flight (such as raptors), the given measurement is wingspan. Arrows and captions point out important features of the birds and many illustrations also show the birds in their typical environment. Crystal clear photographs bring the birds on the page to life, and notes on distinguishing features will help you identify different species of bird in the field. I’m sure if you are already an expert this is not a problem, but for a casual birdwatchers it is easy to get lost. The forums are dedicated to wild birds, birding, binoculars and equipment and all that goes with it.Different forms for males, females and juveniles are shown where appropriate to help with identification. I found changes to illustrations and/or text for the grouse, divers, several groups of raptors, terns, owls, swifts, woodpeckers, swallows, redstarts, flycatchers, tits, finches and buntings. Damit wurde mehr Platz gewonnen für teilweise oder komplett neue Zeichnungstafeln, oder einfach nur größere Zeichnungen, und detailliertere Texte.

The text and illustrations are mostly familiar to readers of the first edition, but overall, I would say this new edition is even better than the first!

Außerdem gab es Änderungen in der Familie der Meisen: die Lapplandmeise heißt jetzt Sibirische Meise. With its greater pagination and added illustrations, the new version is bigger and better than ever. The most complete guide to the 49 species of bird of prey (eagles, vultures, hawks, buzzards, osprey and falcons) found in Europe Every species has a comprehensive descriptive entry, with the most up-to-date information on population, distribution, status, behaviour, habitat, voice, breeding biology, food and hunting techniques. New settings are available to hide species from outside your region, change the font size, and choose to stream or download videos. Above all, field guides should be functional guides rather than biological textbooks so if anything I'd prefer the sort of arrangement found in WildGuides 'Britain's/Europe's Birds'.

They have been chosen carefully to show not only important identification features but also to give clues to the usual habitat favoured by the bird, and its typical posture. Hier erhält der Leser kurze Einführungen in die Benutzung des Buchs und die Grundlagen zur Bestimmung von Vögeln.Main features: comprehensive coverage of every bird recorded in Britain and Ireland; the only photographic guide to show all plumages likely to be encountered; more than 3,200 superb colour photographs carefully selected to show key identification features; many photographs of individual rare birds identified in Britain and Ireland; simple steps to help you find and identify any bird you see pages designed to allow easy and accurate comparison; latest information on status, population, distribution and conservation designations; and distribution maps featuring summer, winter and resident ranges, plus details of migration routes to and from Britain and Ireland. Taxonomy has come a long way since the second edition was published in 2010, with many splits (and some lumps) adopted in the intervening 12 years.
