I worked on the lighter parts of the bamboo using a watery Payne’s Gray and Winsor Blue Green Shade mix for the highlight area and a (mostly) Winsor Lemon, Permanent Sap Green and Winsor Blue (Green Shade) mix for the yellow-green parts. Remember that the eye perceives tones relative to the tones around them, so always think of this as a process of refinement. Kermit the Frog was first introduced in 1955 and has since appeared in various Muppet projects, including Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, as well as other television shows, feature films, specials, and public service announcements. There were lots of variations of hue within the frog’s skin so I mixed a base of Permanent Sap Green and Winsor Blue (Green Shade), adding Winsor Lemon for yellow-greens, or Winsor Lemon and Cobalt Turquoise Light for the blue-greens.

I kept the mix watery as I was again trying to match the lightest tonal values within these areas of colour. Having worked on each colour area separately, it was now time to step back and assess the painting as a whole. I used the same mix with a size 0 brush to apply to the dark green parts of the frog’s skin, most of which were as a second layer (the layer underneath being dry). I began with the black areas, using the same combination of Payne’s Gray and Burnt Sienna as before, only much thicker this time. I used the size 000 brush and three mixes with a thick consistency: a dark blue of Quinacridone Purple, Payne’s Gray and Winsor Blue (Green Shade); a dark purple of Quinacridone Purple and Burnt Sienna; and a lighter blue of Cobalt Turquoise Light, Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and a touch of Payne’s Grey.
