The inky black levels of drift-dreams and the ocean floor drip in shadows, while the neon glow of Hong Kong cityscapes pop off the screen, giving the image an almost-3D quality. The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the film's original theatrical aspect ratio of widescreen 1. The film definitely has more of a Transformers style than Del Toro's original, not least in its visuals, but the biggest benefit to this is that there's none that bathed-in-darkness-and-rain that dominated the first film which, whilst not beneficial to the lighter tone of the movie, definitely makes it easier to appraise in terms of visual opulence. There is very little that could be said to deter such hardened fans, and to be perfectly honest and fair, I reluctantly agree with such passions. No, it's got as much as the Blu-ray in the highlights, if people are seeing worse highlight retention in the UHD then that's on their TV's tone mapping.

With their armed forces dwindling, mankind puts its faith in ex-pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and trainee Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). Of the young cast, the only one which displayed a mildly interesting personality is Viktoriya Malikova (Ivanna Sakhno), the young privileged pilot rivaling Amara as the hardened soldier. Baby Kaiju Set Visit (HD, 3:07) – Here we get an all access visit to the Hong Kong set to witness firsthand what’s real and what’s digital. We reviewed the UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Pacific Rim on a LG 55B7 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD OLED TV with an LG UP970 Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Tokyo Alley Set Visit (HD, 3:17) – Remember all those explosions in the street during the Kaiju attack when Mako was just a little girl in the film lost in her first drift?

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes--a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)--who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Indeed ultimately Uprising surprises slightly in its narrative turns, affording the unassuming viewer some nice little twists which carry the direction of the action - allowing for not only a little Mecha on Monster action like last time out, but also some Mecha on Mecha combat, which was never tackled in the first film. And I’ll leave you with this…watch to find out why the color red is so important to GDT in this feature.

On the plus side, this means that the 4K Blu-ray release looks and sounds amazing, almost matching up to its predecessor, which was something of a benchmark for upscaled 4K discs on release. I'm bumping this because I bought Pacific Rim HDR and a 4K Blu-ray player over the weekend and it's glorious. A personal favorite scene is Jake's speech just as the team is about to launch into Tokyo where the sun shines and bounces off the metallic parts of the uniforms, the Jaegers, the Shatterdome platform and glimmers off the clouds in the sky with such an amazing picturesque quality that it almost feels like a real photo from the set. Pacific Rim: Uprising is a modestly effective sequel, boasting plenty of grand scale action but not a lot else. Depth: Characters all feel living and breathing on my 4K television screen as they literally pop in three-dimension from the blurred out, depth of field backgrounds.
