First-time author White shows the technique and polish of a pro in this absorbing romance, which comes closer than most to hitting the Buffy mark. Feed them, take them to the doctor when they're sick, don't beat them, and don't sell them to strangers. Fans of Kiera Cass's Selection series or Cynthia Hand's Unearthly trilogy will fall in love with this enchanting, heartfelt YA romance. It has no depth, no characterization, the mythology is window dressing at best and has no impact on the plot (serioiusly, everything could have worked without magic or deities as well), and the romance wasn’t particularly swoon-worthy either. From my review it might seem like The Chaos of Stars was an utter disaster, but it actually was not.

And then bam, he's the descendent of Greek gods which is just completely random and irrelevant to the story except for the fact that White puts her foot in her mouth when she states that Greek and Egyptian mythology is the same thing. I open my eyes to see Ry staring at me, and my desert soul erupts with turquoise water, floods and cascades and waterfalls rushing in around my rocky parts, pushing and reshaping and filling every hidden dark spot.

She lives with her family near the ocean in San Diego, where they obsessively care for their deeply ambivalent tortoise. But Isadora’s quickly finding that a “normal” life comes with plenty of its own epic complications—and that there’s no such thing as a clean break when it comes to family. Cast out, Isadora's mom starts giving birth to a daughter named Dora and she decides to possibly (forget it, you know she is) giving Ry a chance although she doesn't believe in his love-crap baloney. But, like I said, I have never been a big fan of history, thus I know relatively little about Egyptian culture.

So what do you do when your mother, Isis is THE goddess of life and your father, Osiris, is THE god of death? The story – and by that I mean what you actually get to read about when you pick up this book – is about things like Isadora drinking slushies with Ry, Isadora being cynical about her mom, who has never, in this book, shown a single time that she doesn’t absolutely love her daughter. Isadora grow up into a bitter teen who believes her mother only has children (one every 20 years) because the modern world no longer worships them and lives off her children's worship. Isadora would rather think about how much she wants to spite her mother, redecorate every room she enters (she’s an aspiring interior designer), and not fall in love with the beautiful Greek boy, Ry, who’s hanging around. It was a really good book but not quite that 5 star amazingness I would've liked to feel but it's still a favorite of mine now anyway. I know her from her Paranormalcy books although I haven't read them yet and of course also her more recent Mind Games book, which I also haven't read yet, unfortunately, but I heard great things about all her books.
