But it’s not just the power of the DM75’s bass that impresses but also its seamless integration and agility, which means there’s no booming or overhang to pull you out of the moment. If something isn’t quite to your liking, it can easily be fixed using the bass, treble and EQ settings. If the issue persists, you might prefer to add an external subwoofer (in which case the DM100 rolls off low frequencies at 80Hz) – it’s great that Canton gives you the option. However, with judicious tweaking most people should be perfectly happy with the Canton’s built-in subs. Once properly integrated, bass sounds fast and agile, starting and stopping on a dime. Installing the DM100 couldn’t be simpler. Once you’ve hauled your TV on top, it’s simply a case of connecting its optical digital output – anything you watch will play through the Canton. Just make sure your TV’s digital output is set to “PCM”. On the question of which is 'best' way to connect, it's impossible for Canton to give general advice on this, as there are too many possible permutations of TV/player/set-top box etc. Again, it comes down to personal preference: if you think it sounds better connected from player to DM50, go for it! Others may prefer to route all inputs via their TV, with a single lead going to the Canton. Housing a 200 watts digital amplifier with a 2-way loudspeaker system, the HDF body of DM101 system has an elegance and durability of its own. An incorporated sub-woofer uplifts the sound quality and leaves a theatre effect in the room. With a sleek design and slim body, the sound system can be mounted anywhere desired such as below the television, or even wall mounted. The smart TV sound preset adjusts the sound as per the location of the Soundbase ensuring the best quality and effect. The pre-set equalizers measure the bounce and echo effect of the sound in a certain position from the set-up location and sets the sound effects accordingly.

I lived with this arrangement fairly happily but always kept an eye on soundbar technology and improvements over the years. I do have 5.1 Surround Sound, but I also had my telly professionally calibrated and there was always a sense that the picture was far superior to the potential sound, that it was adequate but no more. Another minor bum note is Surround mode, which does little to enhance your enjoyment, aside from a gentle widening of the soundstage. It’s fine but you lose the directness of Stereo mode. But the DM100 isn’t all about that bass. First-class mid-range and treble reproduction lends impressive clarity and vigour, heightening the excitement when the action hots up. The snap of gunfire is fierce but never coarse, plus every scene is teeming with incisive top-end detail. To access the advanced sound settings, hold down the “play mode” or “sound” buttons and use the volume keys to turn them on and off. The setup menu is predictably basic on the three-digit display, but it’s better than the cryptic flashing lights used by other soundbases.Another 'fix' was to go to the actual bluray player settings and set the Dolby Digital and DTS to 'downmix PCM' but from what I understand this converts the multi channel into a stereo channel which is less than ideal. Dimensions were 60 x 30 and a perfect match for the granite board! Maybe this was a bit of overkill, but better that than to try and change anything once the Kuro and Canton were in position. The current arrangement is: Now this is purely coincidental, but the dimensions of my TV stand are 56 cm wide x 30 cm deep, the Canton is 55 x 30 and it fits absolutely perfectly and blends seamlessly, almost like they were designed to work together. Add this to the weight factor mentioned earlier (the Canton can support tellies up to 40 kilos) and the only other competition was the Maxell SB3000, which looked like an absolute beast and would be far more dominant aesthetically.

The built-in subwoofer can turn your movies from weak, boring watches to powerful, immersive booming hits which rival the magic of the cinema. 180° speaker technology will fill the entire room, so whether you’re huddled on the sofa or spread about on your own beanbags and chairs, not a single word or sound will be missed by anyone. Unlike the flimsy credit-card types we see a lot with rivals, Canton supplies a chunky and solid remote with clearly-labelled buttons that make it intuitive to use. Bluetooth aptX allows for connecting up your smartphone to stream music or podcasts straight from your favourite app. Just tap your NFC-enabled smartphone to the speaker and enjoy instant pairing. On the front is a small LED display above a subtle Canton logo. The display only has room for three digits, which feels a little simplistic when dealing with some of the setup menu options but it’s fine otherwise. Thankfully it disappears when idle, leaving you with a blank fascia that doesn’t distract from the screen.

The Bluetooth connection seems reliable so you won’t struggle to change the volume or settings at any point. We would recommend altering your TV and mobile sound settings to accommodate and finely tune the sound, but apart from this, once it is connected you’re good to go. This also applies if you have a Sky box or separate Freeview. Wireless connectivity is slowly but surely taking over the world of home entertainment, and we have already spoken in detail about Bluetooth streaming (including high-res aptX audio). WiFi integration has become an equally common feature with soundbases, as it supports high-resolution formats and works beautifully with both simple ‘one TV - one soundbase’ setups, as well as surround, multi-room and multi-device setups. The configurations of such wireless features are all usually done by a simple app - just connect the Ethernet port found on your soundbase to your home network’s broadband router, and follow the instructions. Dead easy. I know with Forums you can get a sense that this issue is a frequent occurance because that is why we have posted comments, but I wonder how many are affected by this issue, 1 in 10, 1 in 1000, 1 in 50,000? - I get slightly more worried when I hear someone has the same issue twice - unusually for Lightning to strike twice unless the obvious is true and there is a Quality issue. My main concern is where there could be a quality difference between the Canton receiving a 5.1 signal and a PCM signal - whether it's surround effects would be compromised dependant on imput. The DM100 also does a fabulous job with music, thanks to its sophisticated hi-fi approach. The use of separate tweeters, mid-range drivers and subs gives you a lovely full-range sound, delving deep into the low frequencies without sounding tubby and sprinkling music with silky treble. There are big dynamics, focused vocals and a sense of refinement that you simply don’t get from any other soundbase. Should I buy the Canton DM100?

As you can see, I have it mounted high up and under the telly - the top shelf is 86 cm from the ground and the granite chopping board and absorber mat add another 2 cm = 88 cm. You should also be able to see just how small and discreet it is in appearance compared to my Center speaker, it's still hard to believe it makes such a big sound sometimes. This soundbar includes two tweeter drivers with a diameter of 1 inch or 19mm, delivering clear and crisp high-frequency sounds. Additionally, it is equipped with two mid-range drivers with a diameter of 2 inches or 50mm, producing well-defined mid-range frequencies. Furthermore, the Canton DM 75 features four woofer drivers with a diameter of 4 inches or 100mm, delivering deep, rich bass tones to enhance the overall audio experience. In my opinion the Canton DM60 is one of the best sound bases that you can get if you want something that’s small and sleek, but still sounds fantastic whether its watching TV or listening to music, but why not pop in to your local Richer Sounds location to hear this brilliant sound base for yourself? It’s lovely to use, it looks classier than its price tag would suggest, and the sound quality is the best of its kind. For a boost in sound compared to what your telly can give you, this base with six speakers and Voice Intelligibility is one of the cleverest on the market. There are also bass, treble and lip sync adjustments, plus three EQ settings that let you match its acoustics to the location – EQ1 is for free-standing sideboard placement, select EQ2 if your TV is placed on top of the unit, while EQ3 is for placement on a unit or shelf. Canton DM50 – Operation If you’re after a soundbase that both looks good and performs brilliantly, this Canton DM55 is definitely one you need to audition.
