This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky. Those who have rated this whisky a 4.. are spot on. Though let me make it clear, this is not just any 4.. this is a strong 4.. a special 4 as this whisky deserves. But it can't go beyond 4 because of its flaws, yet.. ironically, it is the flaws that earn it a .. "special" 4. Maybe it got too costly, maybe the supply of ex-Oloroso casks has dwindled, maybe it’s a combination of the two factors. I’d say “who knows” but I’m sure Benromach’s distiller, blender and accountants know. All I know is that I’m ready to get to drinkin’ and see how this compares to the old 10.

Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv. Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. If no such law exists in a Member’s country of residence, the Member has to be over 21 years old to use the Service. By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate. It has enough body to take some water and opens up with a few drops, patience is rewarded with this one. Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Peated to 12-14ppm, so a little less than Highland Park, then matured in 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry and married for the tenth year in sherry casks. A beautifully balanced combination of bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks with a slightly peated spirit. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying.

Mouth: quite smooth, with elegant smoke, oranges and herbal honey. Hints of eucalyptus and mint. Some crushed peppercorns. Plummy sweetness but also dried nuts and liquorice. Still this subtle dustiness – really nice. You may find it helpful to take a peek at the flavour wheels here: http://malt-review.com/2015/09/10/whisky-flavour-wheels-and-colour-charts/ and I’d also massively recommend looking at the WSET systematic approach to tasting (designed for wine, mostly, but it feeds very well into spirits too). Enter Benromach 10, which I grabbed in December, whilst in search of a New Year’s Eve bottle that wouldn’t bore me to sleep before midnight. Owned by the excellent independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is a small distillery in Forres which purports to make Speyside whisky ‘the old fashioned way’.
