Additionally, another impressive feature of this pair of affordable monitors is the extra-large magnets with the HS5 advanced magnetic circuit design . Positioning is important for the soundstage (More on that near the end). But when in the correct position, it’s spacious and a joy to listen to. The Yamaha HS5 is an excellent monitor for any intermediate or beginner producer looking to get a solid audio mix. It has a crisp and clear sound thanks to its incredible capabilities. The tuning section features Room Control and High Trim switches which adjust the high and low end to suit your environment.

Because of the design and how they were engineered, the placement of monitor speakers is very important. If we look at the rear side of it it includes both a 1/4″ and XLR inputs along with the HF/LF trim controls. Unrivaled clarity: These speakers are renowned for a clear sound, particularly in the mids and highs. With appropriate referencing, this can be a gateway into hearing detail within your mix like never before, particularly excelling in vocal production and other mid and high-end sonic forces. The HS5’s 5" woofer and 1" dome tweeter are bi-amplified with enough juice to make a stereo pair of these little guys plenty loud unless you’re as deaf as a post. (A 45W amplifier powers the woofer, while a 25W amp drives the tweeter.) A continuously variable level control is provided. Balanced XLR and TRS connectors provide alternate input; the latter can accept unbalanced signals. It would’ve been nice if the XLR connector latched, but that’s asking for the moon in a monitor with such a low price.Even after directly comparing the Yamaha HS5 to other studio monitors in its price range, it is still my favorite for its accuracy, purity, and clarity . Experiment with proximity, positioning, and controls to find the sweet spot for audio that you are happy with. The new HS5 design has improved noise reduction , and while many port design speakers have a noise problem, the HS5s offer noise reduction that reaches up to 6dB .

The newly designed bi-amplified drivers and advanced magnetic circuit design have taken this classic to the next level, and Yamaha’s speaker engineering team provide an optimum response in any room or any kind of space. The Yamaha HS5 has a frequency range of 54Hz – 30kHz , which covers both high and low end quite well. However, if you work a lot with bass instruments, having an additional subwoofer for more low-end is a good idea. Its compact size makes it ideal for smaller rooms and desktop use, making it a preferable choice over the HS8 for some people. Similar to the JBL, the KRK ROKIT 5 G4 has a reputation for being bass-heavy, so it would better suited to producers after more bass than what the HS5 can deliver. They have an exceptional low-end response right down to 42 Hz. Conclusion While not ideal for bass-heavy genres, the HS5’s transparent mids and clean highs perform excellently for mixing and professional use. You also want to place them symmetrically so that the distance is the same from the side and rear walls to create an accurate listening environment.
