I do think that the book was a little bit slow to get into the action but once you got there, it did not stop. I think for a debut novel for this author, it was a very strong beginning the character development, and the way that Helen was resistant to this new world felt realistic. It didn’t feel like she was just immediately accepting of it like a lot of modern world meets fantasy world books do. It's the Chronicles of Narnia meets Harry Potter. This fantastic winter tale is the perfect blend of classic portal fantasy and the magic world co-existing with our own. It's a beautiful reminder of what is truly important in life." Overall, I enjoyed A Soul as Cold as Frost. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia. It’s a fantastic story for teens 12+ (although some may struggle with the lengthier descriptions. In any case, give it a try. You might love this aspect of the book!) Jennifer Kropf has a poetic style of writing that slides like hot chocolate down the throat, warm and gooey in a good way. There is an abundance of adjectives throughout that occasionally distracted me from the action but otherwise the writing is solid. Her prose is ideal for a Christmassy read, strongly reminiscent of Narnia, with solid world-building and vivid settings. Mara Rouge ("bitter red", huh?) was a sly and intimidating antagonist, one who was surely inspired by C.S. Lewis' White Witch and Hans Christian Andersen's Snow Queen. I do really wish that the Quarrel of Sword and Bone had lasted longer and that we could've seen more of the mental and spiritual war that Mara Rouge was supposed to wage on Helen, but this is just a small shortcoming in the grand scheme of things.

As Helen Bell is whisked into a wintry adventure, from snow squatches, to trains, to magic libraries, frost giants, dwarf dwellings, red palaces, and more, Mia Hutchinson-Shaw provides a stunning array of unique voices in delightful accents. I think I want to reread this every December, certainly next year! It’s such a beautiful story and I honestly need people to read this and talk to me so I can fangirl with them. Something was seriously wrong with me, and there was no chance I’d be bringing it up with these people who stuffed themselves with spiced bread and hot turkey and declared their opinions with loud voices. Because even though I sat in a room crowded with relatives, I felt the familiar pang of being alone. Same as I did every year during the holidays when I woke up to the cold bite of winter and relived the ache of bad memories that came with it. Faith lies at the center of this story, melding fantasy with hints of the first Christmas story is an intriguing and beautiful way. Burly eyebrows framed hard silvery eyes that gleamed like dimes. My gaze shot to where my aunt still hadn’t come out of the bakery.

I remember there were scenes where I would wonder, “So, what’s the villain doing? Oh, she’s still walking toward him with a sword. She started that three paragraphs ago…” For me, these instances pulled me out of the story and made it difficult to continue. Helen I really want to know what’s going to happen next and what adventures are coming from this author. As I said, I enjoyed reading it but there are some things that made my reading go slow. I have to say the characters are really good and definitely I love them. If you want to give it a try do it, it’s really interesting and entertaining but keep in mind what I just wrote. As though summoned by the girl’s lunacy, a horn-like blast echoed down the city street, and I whipped around in alarm.

Some parts do feel a little bit drawn-out when the descriptions seem to overtake the plot but only in the first half. Once you pass that mark the pace levels out and the story becomes practically unputdownable. A dozen people herded through the lines, snatching up lemon pastries, coffee cakes, and boxed pumpkin pies from the shelves. These people were all regular—no beak-noses or teardrop ears. Suddenly, finding herself in the middle of a war between good and evil, Helen is forced to embark on a journey that pulls her out of her comfort zone. She is the last line of defense between the extermination of good in a fantastical world called Winter.PDF / EPUB File Name: A_Soul_as_Cold_as_Frost_-_Jennifer_Kropf.pdf, A_Soul_as_Cold_as_Frost_-_Jennifer_Kropf.epub

All the scene were described in a way you could literally understand everything, However, I found it hard to read some chapters because of the amount of information it has; this as a result of how scene were described, I understand that is good to give enough information to understand the location but sometimes I just found it to overwhelming. This is a book you have to really pay attention to and it can be a little heavy because of everything it describes. As I said, I really enjoyed reading it but several times I had to stop doing it because I couldn’t focus or I just didn’t understand some scenes or things that were happening so that was something I do not like. The book although it is for young adult sometimes I felt it was for adults because of the dialogues. Perhaps of that, the book it’s always moving, there is something happening all the time and that made me keep reading it. I do find the story really interesting but I didn’t like that much how some scenes (Not all of them) were described, I think some chapters had too much information and made the story slow. I smooshed my face against the window, my hands cupping around my eyes to see where he went. But beyond where the boy had been, two dozen beings of unnatural height congregated around tables, hunching to fit beneath the ceiling. The sight sent a barrel of heat rolling through my stomach. Pointy ears and long noses protruded from their heads, hidden only when they sipped from their steaming mugs. Some of them had to be as tall as the lampposts outside. The Chronicles of Narnia meets Harry Potter. This fantastic winter tale is the perfect blend of classic portal fantasy and the magical world co-existing with our own. This magical Christian fantasy adventure totally hits the spot and got everything right. It is a beautiful reminder of what is truly important in life." ( USA Today best-selling author Astrid V. J.) I turned to go after her, more curious about what she was doing than what was happening in the family room, even if she was just cleaning up in the kitchen.I had only one memory of my father chasing us into an ocean of snow so unblemished. My sister Kaley was just a baby, and my brother Winston and I could barely run on our toddler legs. After Winston and I had exhausted ourselves building forts, my mother had brewed hot chocolate on the stove, and we’d spent the day listening to my dad sing off-key Christmas carols while decorating the tree with popcorn we’d strung ourselves. I slid into the chamber where amber light danced along every surface from the candle on the coffee table, and I dragged a chair across the rug Sylvia told me she found in the Middle East, biting my lips when the chair leg caught a tassel and ripped it right off. Everybody that’s anybody in Winter is throwing around some pretty sweet ice magic. Namely Zane and the evil queen. Thanks to the author’s vivid descriptions, I was able to very clearly “see” the ice magic in action, almost feel it blasting off my skin. Glory to Elowin! It was a stifled muffle through her facemask as she cast one last look at me and slapped the medallions together.
