Chances are if you tried the original They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara, you may find it hard to believe that it could get any better (our thoughts exactly…) but the brains behind Benefit have done the impossible! The force of the magnet is subtle, so you can't feel it working — but you can see the results immediately. I usually spend loads of time trying to get my brush into every little nook and cranny of my eye, but the magnetic pull of this formula against the brush does all of that for me. So not only do my lashes look longer and fuller than normal, I can get them that way in a fraction of the time. You want your lashes to look long and lifted. Perhaps you can’t live without your eyelash curler, or you have monthly LVL treatments; this is the mascara you’ve been waiting for. Magnets are usually heavy, but this magnet mascara is light as air. When applied, you can barely feel the lightweight formula, which is why lashes stay lifted all day long.

The brushes: The OG They’re Real! brush had an hourglass shape with long plastic bristles and a custom-domed tip that targets tiny lashes. In contrast, the new They’re Real! Magnet brush is straight and has much shorter plastic bristles that easily grab lashes and allow you to get right to the root. We were immediately impressed with the formula and how effortlessly it coated our lashes. Even after layering it through our lashes just a few times, we had impressive length. It also kept our lashes well separated, and they didn’t clump together. Lashes look long and lifted; Benefit did an instrumental test on 21 women and the results were that lashes looked 40% longer! But just to have that small bit of time of great lashes wasn't worth it to me :( Our verdict: We’re pretty obsessed with the new formula! Will we be buying the OG They’re Real! Mascara again? We feel kinda bad, but we love the new version so much more, simply for the fact it builds up so fast and adds way more lift and length. However, if you do prefer a more natural-looking, fluffy lash, then you may prefer the original. Using the wand, I raked the mascara through my lashes, making sure I started right at my lash line. I like to apply one coat of mascara to each eye, let it set a little bit, and then go in with a second layer. One coat later and I was pretty impressed. If I was going out of the house I would definitely go in with another coat or two, as the mascara definitely focuses on length over volume (thanks to the magnetic fibres which cling to the ends of your lashes as you pull the wand away).By the evening, there was a slight transfer on my eyelids, which I usually expect as my skin can be quite oily. However, the staying power was proved by the removal process, requiring a little more elbow grease and good faith to remove all traces. However, the formula does tend to smudge. When we baked under our eyes, we didn’t see any smudging along the lower lash line until after about six hours, but when we didn’t set our makeup with powder, we did see more smudging after just a few hours. If you tend not to have oily skin, then you might not have any smudging at all. If you have sparse lashes and want lots of volume, this might not become your go-to mascara as it doesn’t add crazy volume (just plenty of length!). However, you can always try layering this with a volumizing formula to build up the intensity. As mentioned previously, the formula acts in tandem with the magnetic core in the brush to pull lashes up and out. For Helfrich and her team, creating the magnetic technology was the hardest part of development. "Through many rounds of testing, we discovered that placing the magnet at the very center core of the brush was the secret to pulling lashes up & out during application," she says. "Next, we had to determine the right weight and strength for it to pair perfectly with the magnetic formula. A magnet too strong would pull too much formula onto the brush and get messy; a magnet too weak wouldn’t attract enough formula to create extreme length. Eventually, we found the perfect balance." In fact, I like my lashes as dramatic as a good Hollywood movie, with a touch of reality of course. However, I hate faffing with falsies, so I spend a lot of time hunting for new mascaras that will give me maximum volume and curl with minimal effort. I’m a fan of Benefit mascaras and my expectations were very high, because if we’re talking ‘They’re Real!’ but better, I know we are about to hit iconic grounds.Many people find the original they’re Real! Mascara hard to remove. However, it’s all about the formula you use to take it off. Benefit has a dedicated they’re Real! Remover if you’d like to stay within the range or I’d recommend a bi-phase eye makeup remover. A bi-phase formula combines two phases of oil and water mixed, which lift away stubborn, long-wear makeup without pulling or tugging. One of my favourites is La Roche-Posay Respectissime.
