If like me you have been brought up on the Carry On franchise then this is a gem of a book. It gives you insights and fact about the films and their stars and theres some great behind the scenes pictures. I did lots of reminiscing and there was so many, "oh I forgot about that one moments"! The only problem with this book is, I still cant decide which my favourite Carry On film is! This book was written by a fan, someone that researched very carefully about this actors and actresses, and I am surprised and saddened by the fate of almost all T_T one would think they were so well know, that they would be rich, but no, and that is only a little bit of the problem… they were also repressed and forced to do all over again the same parts and the same things, yes it was great to be around friends, just like a family, but it would be great to be a little more appreciated… it was a kind of slavery, and I am happy and sad that I read this book, that I got to know so much more about all of this carry on family. A fabulous five star read! From the very first line you are drawn into the story with Sarah Miller’s beautiful prose. Her comparison of the crochet hook to the fiddle’s bow and the music it produces sets the tone and spirit for a novel filled with hopes and dreams. Her words are so descriptive and readily convey Caroline’s thoughts and feelings. Scott Shane's outstanding work Flee North tells the little-known tale of an unlikely partnership ...is the message for both young and old readers. Maybe it was Gaiman's intention to first show how fear can manifest and paralyze, or seduce, to stay or become a victim or even perpetrator. Or it's just a little coincidental side effect of the plot he wanted to create and I´m overanalyzing and hyper vivisecting again. I also didn’t particularly care for the way she writes the relationship between Caroline and Charles. I always thought of them as equals in that they cared for and respected each other. But the way she writes Charles’ love for Caroline as that of some kind of worship really bothered me. I don’t believe it and I don’t think it’s appropriate. Frost takes a deep dive into the history of the Carry Ons from their genesis and early days in the late ‘50s, through its heyday in the ‘60s and it’s slow demise in the ‘70s, a decade which was certainly not the franchise’s golden age. She also examines the not-so-successful relaunch film “Carry On Columbus” and the many recent attempts to revive the series. Personally, I don’t think this should happen as a modern version could never match the sheer innocent fun of the originals. So bottom line I "liked" this book -- but didn't love it. I'm a bit disappointed in the way my feelings have changed for much loved characters. I have to believe this account was for the most part accurate portrayals of the real- life people because this book was approved and authorized by the Little House estate and the author was given actual archives to work with. That won't make any sense to my boy, but still, I try to be honest with him whenever I can. "I don't know if we're friends," I say. "But we're colleagues."
