The first pass of the wine past the cones takes the flavours and aromas of the wine which is then condensed and kept to be added back to the wine later (this is known as the essence). The winemakers biggest challenge was to make the flavour profile of the wine as close to the full-strength wine as possible and I think they’ve done a pretty darned good job with the 0% sparkling wine.

While the process might seem simple to the eye, the (Australian created) spinning cone technology employed in the process by McGuigan is far from it. While its detractors commented on it's sweetness: "watery and sugary –what a bizarre combo", "has very little colour, could be confused for tonic or soda water" and "is a good substitute for regular wine, but too sweet for my taste". The tasters who enjoyed this described it as "more like wine – somewhat like a sweeter prosecco", "Comes pretty close to the taste of sparkling wine" and "nice all round flavour, makes you feel like you're actually drinking alcohol". The Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz takes the top spot for a non-alcoholic red wine in my opinion and I’m glad the team have taken the time to get this one right as it shows in quality and taste!Free from alcohol, full in flavour, the McGuigan Zero range is a contemporary alcohol-free wine range that allows you to enjoy wine without the alcohol. Effervescent bubbles foam up as I pour a glass and it looks exactly like a full-strength alcoholic sparkling wine. The McGuigan Zero range also includes shiraz, rosé, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc all of which are 0% ABV – that’s right, Mcguigan zero alcohol wine. Post fermentation, we use the latest spinning cone technology, working at low temperatures to gently remove the alcohol, ensuring the wines maintain their delicate fruit flavours.

Many of our tasters disliked this, describing it as "sweet and fruity, but with an aftertaste like sucking on a lemon" and "it tastes like the wine we'd steal off our parents in the 80s".It looks the part in the glass too, thanks to delicate bubbles, a welcome tartness and flavours of apple, pear and peach. Packed with a refined, balanced and complex flavour profile the Wolf Blass Zero Shiraz has a full flavour profile that so many non-alcoholic options fail to come close to. The range includes a Zero Sparkling, Zero Rose, Zero Shiraz, Zero Chardonnay; and Zero Sauvignon Blanc.
