It's taken me 35 years from release to buy and listen to this LP which, I think it's fair to say, is widely regarded as a classic British pop album of the 1980s.

The band's ninth studio album City of Love was released on 6 March 2020. In February 2021, they released their tenth studio album entitled Riding on the Tide of Love to commercial success in the UK. Another reissue was released on 22 October 2012 by Edsel Records as part of a catalogue reissue program for the band's first five studio albums. This set contained all of the B-sides and remixes associated with the album, as well as also including the Legacy Edition bonus disc. [6] Reception [ edit ] If they intend to engage with that process, even hurry it along, they don’t show it. They are an immaculate live band, urged on by a watertight rhythm section, lived-in interplay between guitarist Gregor Philp and pianist James Prime, and the boundless charisma of Lorraine McIntosh, whose voice remains a wonder. But they are not a particularly daring one.Deacon Blue appeared at The Homecoming Live Final Fling Show, at Glasgow's SECC on 28 November 2009, and headlined Glasgow's Hogmanay on 31 December 2009. The band performed several gigs, including Glastonbury, and the Liverpool Echo Arena on 29 July 2011. It has never been played live - but we recorded It live for a Radio Picadilly session in September '87. I think we will play it live sometime..." After occasional chance encounters with the songs [particularly ' Dignity' on radio stations] it went on to my ever-growing wish list. The special brew, with 853 bottles, was released on November 30 in collaboration with the Glasgow-based bottler Caskade and matured for 13 years in a single cask. On the release of the whisky, the band said: “We are delighted to celebrate 35 years of Raintown with this special lmited edition whisky, bottled by Glasgow’s own Caskade. The album, widely praised as Deacon Blue's finest work, has the overtones of a concept album relating to the struggles of urban life in the inner city. The city being unmistakably Glasgow, referenced by the roots of the band and by the images by photographer Oscar Marzaroli on the cover of the album: the view of a rainy day over Glasgow's West End (with the Finnieston Crane featuring prominently). It seems to rate as a classic, above the follow-ups, but although it's good quality material I think When the World Knows Your name is more polished and given the extra production etc that's probably to be expected.

Sophisti-pop was a British rather than an English species of pop, with some of its finest exemplars coming from Scotland. Apart from the Blue Nile, who are one of the legendary groups of the the subgenre, the Scots also produced Deacon Blue, a Glasweigan group named after a tune by Steely Dan (a noteworthy sophisti-pop influence). Their debut album sold almost 1 million copies in the UK, peaking at #14. While it moody atmospherics are typical sophisti-pop fare, they have more of a youthful vibe than many other artists on this list, offering coming-of-age tales for Scots in the 1980s. Due to Deacon Blue's part-time status after reformation, Ross released additional solo albums in 2002 and 2005 and has written for and with other recording artists. In 2009, Ross and McIntosh recorded an album together under the name 'McIntosh Ross'. The band performed at Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, as the pre-match entertainment for the Rugby league Super League Grand Final on 14 October 2006, and continued on to a full UK tour in November. Raintown by Deacon Blue (Album, Sophisti-Pop): Reviews Raintown by Deacon Blue (Album, Sophisti-Pop): Reviews

What to say about an album which has "Chocolate girl" and "Dignity" on it? These outshine anything else here, of course. It wasn’t long before Dougie Vipond quit the group, hoping to pursue a career in television in 1994 - which saw the band split. Fast forward to 1999 and they were reunited for a gig, which led to another album. The songs "Long Distance from Just Across the Road" (from Loaded), "Town to Be Blamed" (Live) (from When Will You Make My Telephone Ring (1st Release), and "Ronnie Spector" (from Dignity (2nd Release)) were not included, though "Ronnie Spector" was included on the follow-up compilation Ooh Las Vegas. All B-Sides (including those released afterwards) were eventually included on Raintown's 3CD+DVD deluxe edition in 2012.

Companies, etc.

The new edition did not include the varied bonus cuts (remixes and b-sides) that were found on the singles from the album. To promote the upcoming release of their new album, the group released a single, "The Hipsters". The single was released in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2012. The album The Hipsters was released on 24 September 2012 and was produced by Paul Savage. A 25th anniversary tour, starting in October 2012, followed. The band performed with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Grand Hall in Glasgow to promote the release of the album. [9] Strong, Martin C. (2002). Between February and March 2018, Deacon Blue embarked on a tour of Spain, marking the first time that the band has played a series of live shows in Spain. The band described the shows as "an incredible experience for us all", and later confirmed that Deacon Blue will be returning to Spain in 2019 for another series of live shows, stating that "Spain has a very special place in our hearts".
