A5 contains portions of " Magic Mountain" as performed by Eric Burdon & War courtesy of Avenue Records / Polygram Music Publishing.

A3 samples Weather Report from "Elegant People" courtesy of MCA Music/Sony Music Entertainment Inc. B4 samples Johnnie Ray from " I'll Never Fall In Love Again" courtesy of Carlyle Music Publishing/Sony Music Entertainment Inc. Recorded at State Of Art and Coach House Studios, Bristol with additional mixing at Moles Studio, Bath. Lovely sound on mine. Quiet and full, with just the right amount of bass, mids and treble. Had this on CD for years but I much prefer this on vinyl. I’m not normally fussed about format as long as the end product sounds good, but this one feels right on record. Recommended. Western Eyes samples Hookers & Gin from the "Sean Atkins Experience" 1957 courtesy of Starfish Records Inc.Pretty much a perfect press, dynamics are spot on and there is minimal surface noise. This is a good release to have too because you get a slightly higher quality gatefold than the newer presses offer. And the poly lined sleeve is a welcome touch too. A2 samples Lalo Schifrin from " The Danube Incident" courtesy of Warner Chappell Music/MCA Records. Smokey Brookes from " Spin-It Jig" courtesy of Goldmine Soul Supply. B4 samples Johnnie Ray from "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" courtesy of Carlyle Music Publishing/Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

A5 contains portions of "Magic Mountain" as performed by [Invalid Artist] courtesy of Avenue Records / Polygram Music Publishing. B5 samples Isaac Hayes from " Ike's Rap II" courtesy of Rondor Music (London) Ltd./Under License from Fantasy Inc. But Dummy is too idiosyncratic to feel like a calculated response to its predecessors. Its obsessions are too specific, and too doggedly pursued: the spy-movie twang of the guitars, the ripple of the Hammond organs and Leslie cabinets—if anything, its vintage signifiers feel out of step with that era’s rush of pre-millennium tension. Bristol’s junglists were carving new routes to the future in every chopped-up breakbeat, while Portishead were drizzling on muted trumpet solos like so much curdled milk. Where most of the decade’s cutting-edge electronic music was zealous about its agenda, Dummy pledged allegiance only to a mood. Quotation marks around "Dummy" on label are identical to each other and not of the complementary, '66''99' variety. First 2 x LP USA press. Distinguished from Portishead - Portishead and Portishead - Portishead which has Sterling RJ in the runout of Side C (making that a 2000s pressing) and Portishead - Portishead which has TML-M in deadwax and UMG rather than PolyGram on label. This is such an amazing pressing. The 1997 MPO of the Self titled album is awful in comparison. This has such rich depth. We’re fortunate as fans this got such a good pressing. The 90s did produce some great sounding vinyl. Quotation marks around "Dummy" on label are identical to each other and NOT of the COMPLIMENTARY, '66''99' variety Only You samples Ken Thorne from "Inspector Clouseau" courtesy of MCA Classics & The Pharcyde from "She Said" courtesy of EMI Publishing/Delicious Vinyl. A2 samples Lalo Schifrin from "The Danube Incident" courtesy of Warner Chappell Music/MCA Records. Smokey Brookes from "Spin-It Jig" courtesy of Goldmine Soul Supply. There are two versions of this reissue - 2008 and 2017. I can’t figure out which mine is as the notes for both versions claim they have identical speech marks around Dummy on the label. However, mine has all the same characteristics as both versions except the speech marks around DUMMY on mine are of the the “66” “99” variety and NOT identical. Can we get some clarification? I don’t want to open the record to read the matrix. Thanks

A3 samples Weather Report from " Elegant People" courtesy of MCA Music/Sony Music Entertainment Inc. The classic debut Portishead album from 1994. The collaboration of studio whiz Geoff Barrow and singer Beth Gibbons, Dummy was made at the same time as a short film noir called To Kill a Dead Man, and the same approach - gloomy, tormented, and wildly melodramatic - permeates the album.
