A question of how far you want to go really as the DT 1770 PRO can cope with plenty of variations and does scale a bit also. This are known to be one of the mildest sounding beyerdynamic in respect to treble. However, I would still describe it as a touch bright, but it never goes to the point of sibilance. Details are rendered impressively. Keep in mind that these are marketed as studio monitors for “musicians, sound engineers, and producers”. This trait can be a double-edged sword as it can be unforgiving to poorly recorded material. Perhaps the biggest difference to note is the fact the DT770 sports non-Tesla technology, using instead the older DT drivers and of course, chiming in at a very portable worthy 32 ohms rather than the DT 1770 PRO’s more considered 250 ohms.

While Apple's devices and their Lightning adapters and USB-C to 3.5mm adapters have excellent low-source-impedance headphone outputs and sound great with these, I can't vouch for off-brands like Android, Samsung, HTC or other iPhone copies. The DT 1770 Pro is a well-balanced and slightly warm headphone with tight bass and smooth highs, being applicable for both professional and hifi use. Plugged into most modern (low source-impedance) sources, the DT1770PRO appear less sensitive because they are drawing much less power due to their 250Ω versus the 17Ω impedance of the LCD-XC.

The initial fit when you put the headphones on is quite comfortable, but after a while I felt the clamp force a bit too strong and that's because I have a large head. And all I had to do was give it a good stretch using a technique I have used on my other headphones. Mids and treble show roughly similar progression with a subdued upper midrange dip and a treble elevation that, whilst not brittle or too bright, certainly has plenty of sparkle and energy. The DT 1770 PRO treble performance sounds a bit more refined and smoother than the DT770 which stays fairly prominent from 6-10k compared to a tiny bit of easing off by the DT 1770 PRO around 7k.The DT 1770 PRO came out at the tail end of last year and almost a year ago to the day we had a guy in their factory getting a sneak peek at it. China kidnapped him (work-related) and we lost the chance to get to grips with it until now. The Beyerdynamic DT1770’s sound is a perfect contrast between being musical and analytical. It is engaging and fun, yet it doesn’t spare any details. Crafted from top-notch materials, it is well-built and highly comfortable. It really sets itself apart in the sea of closed headphones For decades now, users all around the world have been putting their trust in the DT770PRO studio headphones. They are the number one choice for music producers, sound technicians, broadcast users and even us audio fans. The DT770PRO simply is an established piece of equipment in studios, offices and living rooms worldwide. Beyerdynamic felt it was time to update their masterpiece using the latest technologies and so they created the DT1770PRO, the first professional headphone with their already famous Tesla 2.0 technology. Beyerdynamic describes the circumaural (over ear) DT1770PRO as a closed studio reference headphones for mixing, mastering, monitoring and recording and it is the evolution of a studio legend. The DT1770PRO is rated at 250 Ohms and uses the 45 mm dynamic Tesla neodymium driver. There aren't soft rubber nubs at each earpiece; the hard plastic won't scratch glass as metal can, but be careful with fine furniture when you put them down.

The bass is accurate, smooth, deep and unboosted; just what you need for mixing and mastering to ensure your final product will sound great everywhere. I tested the DT 1770 Pros thoroughly over the course of two months, alongside a plethora of other headphones from the likes of Oppo, Shure, Sennheiser and Audio-Technica. That being said the gap is not as huge as it once could have been with very high ohm DT variations due to the Tesla driver technology producing a much more efficient performer even at this high rating. As such, both can play well from portable players but the DT 1770 PRO just scales that bit better, sounding more controlled than the DT770 on stronger amps. Tonality Beyerdynamic told me that treble is elevated with no apparent peaks. In the rather short time I did not find anything to disarm this claim. There might be a slight hint of the acclaimed Beyer-peak but this time you might have to go searching for it a bit more. Clarity, precision and air all managed to impress me.

I actually do not find the Midrange of the DT 1770 PRO to be recessed just a little uneven for audiophile tastes. That odd sharp dip does affect the fundamentals and slips slightly into the lower midrange meaning you don’t get a fullness there that you can find on other closed cans such as the Primes. I am also presuming (ahead of testing) that it will be tuned for specific monitoring purposes (EDM) and as such neutral heads may find it colored in specific areas to do that job accurately rather than a general-purpose reference sound. It reminds me of how Philips wanted the A5 Pro to be used when it came out. The DT1770 has 250ohm drivers which I think are pretty efficient. They sound good straight out of my Audiolab MDAC but I got a definite improvement out of my solid state Meier Corda Prehead amp.

Kevin, have you heard the mrspeakers alpha prime? If so, how would you compare the DT 1770 to it? I have the prime and would like something with a bit more bass and treble sparkle as a complementary headphone. Your thoughts? This isn't as much of a problem for pro headphones; it's the nutty audiophiles who waste their time with aftermarket cables, not the people actually making the music who use these headphones. The Beyers are by far more comfortable for me, because the cups are big enough for my giant ears. I really disklike the cable plug on the earcup touching my sholder when I slightly turn my head though The Sound with the Beyers is as good as a Beyer can get. Far easier to listen to than the Beyer DT 990 which were open and which sounded so bright that I returned them. The 1770 sound significantly better than the 1350 and the T51i. The soundstage is just much, much wider. Bass, soundstage, control and neutrality are very good with the Beyers as usual. Build quality on both pretty decent. These are the genuine MADE IN G E RM A NY article from the world's oldest and best maker of professional headphones for almost 100 years; these aren't rubbish from China.
